  • Buy GM!

Not yet, let me explain. GM is bust, no way it can carry on, but it may have a very bright furture. GM IS doing very well in Asia & very shorty it will dump its Euro-land operations (Saab/Opel/Vauxhall).

Only today it came out with a press pack on the new Chevy Cruz.....& the list prices were shocking. £4000 less than like for like Ford, £6000 less than a like for like VW !

The car its self is very modern based on a new "World" platform. GM has a plan, mass produce in Asia and pile them high/sell cheap in Euro-land. With Opel/Vauxhall dead, GM can rely on its Core customers to buy cars that are totaly Vauxhall, expect for the badge.

At the Prices they are selling at they conner the market.

Now if GM can do that, if they can walk away from the persions/heathcare costs...........perhaps walk away from UAW as well...............I see a VERY profitable furture.

So, if GM do go bust, clear out and restart as a new "GM" i be head of the que to buy stock!

      Re: Buy GM!

A few years ago GM transferred all the engineering responsibility to Opel for the Cruze (global Delta) and the Malibu (global Epsilon). There's no one left in the US to engineer these cars anymore. Together these represent about 30% of total global sales.

Without Opel I'm not sure how they can manage this huge hole. Maybe GMDAT?

I've been a fan of GM's light trucks [best value proposition out there in the catagory] for a long time, but have largely found the cars pretty mundane for years. The Malibu is arguably the best car GM has produced in North America in a couple of decades. German engineering, eh? It shows.

What happens to GM common stockholders if they file for bankruptcy?

They get wiped out, like common holders of LEH did last year. Either assets are sold off (like Lehman) or the company restructures, renegotiates its obligations and likely re-emerges by selling stock under a new ticker symbol (like UAL->UALAQ->UAUA: took about five years to re-emerge after initially filing, I think).

Thanks, that's what I thought. Which is a good enough reason not to touch GM stock. Unless you just like to gamble.

Apparently, mega, if you turn around you'll see you're also at the end of the que.
