  • confusing a bull market with investing genius

That's the best analogy I can come up with for things like

"trade deficits don't matter" (attributing permanence to a merely long-running extraordinary circumstance)

"federal government deficits don't matter" (confusing a long running extraordinary circumstance with permanence)

At the same time there's this nagging little itch saying "maybe they don't matter" ...

What other examples can you all add?

as one drops by the 90th story of the empire state building: "falling doesn't matter." and it doesn't, indeed, matter. it's the sudden stop that matters. that also applies to the ongoing processes you mention- trade deficit, government deficits. it will be the sudden stop that matters.

Good judgement comes with experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.

you are too generous. the iq of a committee is equal to the highest iq of any member divided by the number of committee members.
