  • Blockbuster kaput?

With all those people out of work and with nothing to do but to rent movies and games, I would assume Blockbuster would thrive.

What is that? Is that dreadful "excessive debt" expression again?

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Top U.S. movie rental chain Blockbuster (NYSE:BBI - News) said on Tuesday it has enlisted lawyers to help it raise capital and refinance debt, but stressed it has no plans to file for bankruptcy.

Blockbuster spokeswoman Karen Raskopf said the company has hired law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP but denied news reports that the firm would help Blockbuster file for bankruptcy.

Good riddance. They were never a very customer-friendly company. They deserve it.

video killed the radio star. And then netflix, tivo, dvr, hulu, apple and so on killed the blockbuster.

Yes - I think a review of Schumpeter's "creative destruction" is in order.

This is one of those companies that I always wondered how they've survived so long. It was the 90's last time I remember video stores being busy on a regular basis. I guess I'm just getting old and prefer pushing buttons on my remote to order a movie.

Renting videos from a store with real estate overhead. Nyet. But autozone had good earnings:

Why not bail them out? You know, do it for the jobs. It seems okay to pay companies to keep shifts going making cars no one needs.

                  Re: Blockbuster kaput?

Back in the Iron Age, I used to rent videos from BB, Then came torrents and Pirate Bay:

                  http://thepiratebay.org/recent

                  for downloading I use

                  http://www.utorrent.com/

It is not very complicated to understand and set this up.

So now all my movies and video material are directly downloaded to the computer and I view them on the computer screen. Now, home entertainment free.

I've maybe rented from Blockbuster once - when I got a freebie.

Very not impressed by what is stocked - but frankly this is more a matter of general level of American tastes.

But I do have a funny story.

I introduced a friend to Idiocracy once - urged him to see it as he definitely would enjoy it.

                        He had a blockbuster membership.

We managed to find the only copy (it has been out on DVD for a month). As we were checking the copy out, the clerk (a young Hispanic woman) made a face and asked us: "Are you sure you want to rent this movie? I saw it and really didn't find anything funny or interesting at all in it".

That cemented the deal for my friend.

It is very possible that the female lead is what offended this young lady, but on the other hand the whole concept of Idiocracy is pretty much aimed at the stereotypical everyman...

I consider your calling me a "criminal" to be objectionable. Prove the truth of your slander and libel.

Did he rent it? Or did he listen to the clerk ?
