This is an easy tax to avoid. While I'm not a fan of the state and the way it raises money. You can opt out of this tax. If everybody did....... Well they would raise registration fees.

Yeah, they'll still find a way to get the money

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be
much easier to deal with." ('Atlas Shrugged' 1957)

For you Californians out there: you should know that even though you are prohibited from taking 'driver safety' class to make up a ticket more than once every 18 months - you can ask a judge for a specific exemption to be allowed to take a longer 'driver safety' class to erase a ticket.

This can be done every 12 months.

You must choose a court date, appear before the judge, plead guilty, but request the opportunity to work off the offense as per California Vehicle Code 41501 section 1. Section 2 pertains to the normal 18 month period.

Read the code direct. Memorize. Know your rights.

I've used it - it worked for me.

The state of California gets a bunch of fees no matter what.

The difference is primarily to you: your insurance.

I must express my amazement that the cops are actually expected to turn this money over in New Joisey, or all places. My faith in that state has risen immensely. In some jurisdictions, the cops will just pull your over and extort a cash payment.

Not to denigrate the service policeman offer in America, but what's the point of jeapordizing your 80% pension by accepting the $100 bribe?

There was an article in the NY times last week concerning the French Connection - yes the events upon which the movie with Gene Hackman and Roy Sheider was based on.

In the late 60s/early 70s, 600 pounds of cocaine and heroin was stolen from police storage. Several police detectives 'of interest' died in various shootings.

Another example? The actual events behind 'Serpico':

Another example of widespread systemic corruption.

As hard times again return - as the CalPERS, New Jersey, and various other state pension schemes suffer enormous losses with associated inability to fulfill pension benefits, will the bad old days come back?

so if I have a broken right turn signal, it is illegal to drive from my home to the dealership unless I only make left hand turns.

If all the cops are out working, this will hurt my cousin's donut shops.
