  • New Jersey and you. Perfect together. Just don't speed

    Just got this email.

Subject: FW: Speeding tickets in NJ - please share with anyone you know travels by car in NJ

FYI a friend passed this along to me, watch your speed.

    STATE POLICE - NJ TICKETING

Here's the latest NJ State Police Initiative (Radio Station 101.5 FM confirmed this info).

Starting today (2/19/09), New Jersey will launch 30-day speeding ticket frenzy. The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. One million dollars will go to pay state troopers over-time.

There will be 50 state troopers on duty at all times patrolling the 9 main intersections and highways as follows:

    I-295 North and South,
I-95 Jersey Turnpike North and South
    I-80 East and West
    I-287 North and South
    I-78 East and West
    I-195 East and West
    I-280 East and West
Route 130 - North and South
Garden State Parkway - North and South

    5 MPH
above the limit can justify a ticket and every state
Trooper is supposed to pull a car over and
Write a ticket every 10 to 20 minutes.

They have issued 30 brand new unmarked Crown Victoria cruisers and are bringing in all of their part-timers on full time. If you work
In NJ, NY, DE or CT, you will probably be on one of these highways. So, please be on guard and drive safely!

Starting August 15, the price of a violation not to have your Driver's license, registration or insurance card at the time you are stopped, increased from $44.00 to $173.00. (Keep these documents in your car). And the fine for not having all three documents is $519.00!

The fine for hand-held cell phone use while driving will be going up to $180.00.

Please forward this to people in N.J. and let them know of this latest Police Initiative.

Speeding, Parking Tickets on Rise as Government Revenue Source

Drivers across the country, beware — a heftier fine could be coming to a dashboard near you. Faced with rising deficits and dwindling revenues, many states and local municipalities are turning to increased traffic and parking fines to fill their coffers.

In California, the cost of a "fix-it ticket" nearly tripled on Jan. 1, meaning that drivers in the Golden State can pay up to $100 for having a broken headlight — an infraction that didn't even garner a citation years ago. A bill approved by the state Legislature raised fix-it fines to $25 from $10 and hiked surcharges on regular traffic tickets by $35. Parking tickets and court costs to attend traffic school also increased, by $3 and $25 respectively.
Motorists in Pensacola, Fla., saw fines for parking in front of a fire hydrant or in a fire lane skyrocket from $10 to $100 — a 900 percent increase — after the city's Downtown Improvement Board reportedly unanimously approved the hike earlier this month. Statewide, speeding fines also increased by $10 this month, along with an increase of an additional $25 for exceeding the speed limit by 15 to 29 miles per hour.

And in the Boston suburb of Malden, Mass., Police Chief Kenneth Coye urged officers to bring in revenue for the cash-strapped suburb by writing at least one parking or traffic ticket per shift. more...

We drove back from VT to RI this weekend and saw way more cops than I have seen in 30 years. It makes sense now. Creepy too.

Revenue, revenue, revenue. I know someone who just got a ticket. 73 in a 55. The cop was nice and they talked. But didn't write it down to like a 67 in a 55. Most of the time they will do that. Now the best is when you get to court they will give you the option of pleading guilty to reckless driving not speeding. This way your insurance is not affected. The catch is, the fine is bigger. Can you say revenue?

At which point do you think people will start fighting back?

When they start going to jail and skipping court dates because they *literally* cannot afford to pay the ticket.
Every interest bearing loan is mathematically impossible to pay back.

You can't fight back. You were speeding. The fines aren't nice, but this isn't a case where if you reduce the price you will get more customers.

I think you may be right. Wish there was a way to keep track of default rates for court appearances...

Lots of people do that. Then when they get pulled over, their car get impounded. So skiping the court date is not advisable.

I could write for years on this. This is no surprise and it is happening nationwide. Every cop from KC to Houston is on the streets shooting radar; they are not even checking drivers license histories for warrants - they dont want to slow down to arrest someone.

The fact that americans put up with this crap is so far beyond my comprehension that I cant even put it to words.

If they want to make it another unconstitutional irrational tax, then governments should just do so and hand out bandanas and eyepatches for their stinking road bandits and not worry about it. But this official misuse of power and abuse has the potential for criminal or insurance/eligibility ramifications which blows all this completely out of proportion.

bottom line, if governments will do this to you, they will rob you any other completely illegal, immoral way they can think of as well.

                              and they are
