  • California to lay off 200,000 gov't workers

After a frustrating holiday weekend that failed to yield the one vote needed to end California's budget stalemate, the state is poised to begin layoff proceedings Tuesday for 20,000 government workers.

In addition to the layoffs, the state also plans to halt all remaining public works projects, potentially putting thousands of construction workers out of jobs.

It may just be a ploy to force the hand of the state legislature to actually get the budget passed. However, since Ca requires 2/3 majority to pass the budget, it is not clear whether the ploy will work.

20,000 jobs ... that would add into EJ's predictions of 20% unemployment by next year. And these aren't just jobs at McDonalds or Wally World we're talking about.

As Chris Coles keeps saying, we need to rethink our paradigms. This is getting ugly.

Yeah that kinda startled me too. Not that 20,000 is peanuts.

The linked Forbes article and other sources all say 20,000.

oops - off by a factor of 10. If I was on a log scale it would be no big deal... but in the real world, a factor of 10 is a lot...

        Corrected, sorry for the mistake.

(BTW - I updated the title, but that did not propagate into the thread listing)
