Re: Lawyers recount 'Black Thursday'
I have been dealing with lawyers for nigh on 50 years. In that time, I have met a total of three honest ones who applied any sort of morals or ethics in calculating the fees. One of those ended up in gaol for embeezlement of Trust Funds.
Further when you are suing a Law Firm, you are dealing with a system where the Judges and the Barristers are members of the same Law Society and drink together down at the local Wine Bar, you face a considerable handicap. Sure I won legally, hardly any argument, but the amount awarded to me relative to the costs was a mere pittance. I'm not speaking for the US but in Australia the whole thing should be just abandoned and started again.
Years ago, when the Government here tried to reorganise the Wharfs and break the dominance of the Waterside Workers Federation, they would have got a lot more credibility and respect from the populace if they had tried to sort out the Law Society monopoly as well.
What I think applies to all Western Societies is this.....When the costs charged by the Legal profession are so high that even a moderately well-off citizen cannot afford to access his Legal rights through the Courts, something is terribly terribly wrong!!
