  • Recession in your country?

Here in Singapore, i don't see a real recession yet. Housing prices are down about 15-20% from the peak early last year without any apparent impact on the economy - most people don't dabble in real estate having had bad experience twice in 1997 and 2003.

New graduates, particularly the ones doing finance and banking are having great difficulties getting jobs though. I would expect things to really deteriorate later in the year, perhaps the second half.

Despite the scary export drop figures, fact is you don't find many jobless people here. Civil service jobs are rock solid, the government is preparing to soak up unemployed fresh graduates with an aggressive hiring campaign, particularly for teachers, a job still shunned by many local people.

Switzerland looks steady too. Probably some flight to quality happening right now, specially from the UK.

btw. thanks for the influx from Singapore's GIC sovereign fund!

The Singapore government looks set to do anything to delay a "financial armageddon". Probably to buy time to engineer a soft landing? I'm not sure, only they know the real reason.

Or perhaps they are a client of Gerald Celente?

Latest is a budget that will pay for up to 1 month's wage bill for every working person, and to guarantee (up to 90%) of bank loans to local small and medium enterprises.

New Zealand is in a mild recession. Home prices are down about 7% y/o/y on average. Unemployment is at a 5 year high of 4.6%, although some areas have been relatively unaffected. Near where I live on the south island, it's still pretty close to full employment as far as I can tell.

The 35% decline in the NZ dollar over the last 9 months seems to have given exporters a big boost, which has undoubtedly helped to soften the blow from the shakeup in the global economy.

Got back from India a few weeks ago. Looks ok. People appear more concerned about terrorism/national security than the economy.

No massive lay-offs across the board. Jobs are harder to come by for new graduates but people are still hiring.

The retail sector which usually indicates the state of the economy seems to be doing ok. Had a few chats with some family friends who run electronics stores on the high street in small to medium sized cities. They seem to be doing as well as last year (in terms of sales). The vast bulk of consumer spending in India is cash based and its a heavily cash based economy (people HATE paying tax so the non-tax paid money winds up as "black money" - half the economy by some estimates).

Back here in blighty, its beginning to look like the seventies.

any evidence of a new wave of nihilistic brit rock on the order of the sex pistols or ramones, bringing to a close the era of whining that opened with the cure and may close with coldplay?
