  • Blackwater Rebrands: Xe

Sound like this was produced by one of those Black Box Name Generators. If this bombs, I wouldn't want to have been the Rebranding Consultant.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Blackwater Worldwide is still protecting U.S. diplomats in Iraq, but executives at the beleaguered security firm are taking their biggest step yet to put that work and the ugly reputation it earned the company behind them.

Blackwater said Friday it will no longer operate under the name that came to be known worldwide as a caustic moniker for private security, dropping the tarnished brand for a disarming and simple identity: Xe, which is pronounced like the letter "z."

It's a rare surrender for a company that cherished a brand name inspired by the dark-water swamps of northeastern North Carolina, one that survived another rebranding effort about a year ago, following a deadly shooting in Baghdad's Nisoor Square. The decision to give it up underscores how badly the Moyock-based company's brand was damaged by that incident and other security work in Iraq.

"They have established themselves as the bad guys," said Katy Helvenston, who sued the company following her son's death during a mission in Fallujah while working for Blackwater in 2004. "They've established such a horrible reputation. Why else would they change their name?"

Goebbels would have been fascinated by the challenges of rebranding all the institutions of the Third Reich. Possibly he would have called the Gestapo, Homeland Security.

looks like they landed in concentration camps

Heimatschutz is a German word which literally translated means, "homeland protection." In 1916, Austrian Max Dvorak's Katechismus der DenkmalpfIege appeared. In this book Dvorak builds upon the ideas of fellow Austrian Alois Riegl and extends the idea of "homeland protection" beyond simply protection of geographical borders to encapsulate a society's culture.

At the end of the First World War Heimatschutz groups appear in Austria to protect German culture. In 1930 these groups become part of the Austrian government. In 1933 become part of the Vaterländische Front (Front of the Fatherland). When Austria was annexed by Germany in 1938 the Vaterländische Front was disbanded and the Heimatschutz groups were deported to concentration camps by the SA and later the SS.

Today, the word is used to translate the English expression "homeland security" used by the US federal government after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The Brits tried this in the 70's

We have a Atomic plant called "Windscale".......of course we had a number of disaters, which were kept out of the papers or played down. After one nasty one, they decied to rename the plant "Sea scale"......In the hope that they muddy the waters.

Sadly, both BBC & ITN news always said "The Seascale plant, formely known as Windscale"....rebranding doesn't always work!

It is a sad day indeed when a Great Enterpreneur like Erik Prince has to resign:

Prince's resignation could be seen as a public formality in what has been a dramatic attempt to scrub all public vestiges of Blackwater, given that he remains chairman and sole owner of the network of companies now operating under the Xe umbrella. But it's clear the firm has been thrown into turmoil in recent months. As the Xe statement says, "These appointments follow the addition and departures of several other key personnel. Recent departures from the company include its former Vice Chairman, Chief Operating Officer, President, and Executive Vice President." Joseph Yorio, an ex-Army Special Forces officer and former Vice President of the international shipping company DHL was announced as the new Xe president -- a somewhat humorous development, given Prince's fondness for describing Blackwater as the "FedEx of the U.S. national security apparatus." Meanwhile, Danielle Esposito, a longtime Blackwater employee, was named Xe's new Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President.

The rebranding of Blackwater and its attempts to hide its former self have been downright crude. The company's domestic training centers, which some refer to as private military bases, are now simply labeled "U.S. Training Center." Gone is the sexy black-and-red logo featuring a bear paw in a sniper-scope; it has been replaced by a nondescript, rather amateurish sketch of an American Eagle. The company website has been revamped and scaled down.

One thing that does remain is the Blackwater ProShop, where you can still purchase items ranging from all the ammunition and tactical gear you would need for your own private war, to the ever-popular Blackwater teddy bear. There is currently a blow-out sale in Blackwater baby onesies, which have been reduced from $18 to $10. Toddler polos have also had their ticket price slashed.
Personally, I think the name Zp would have had more legs than Xe.

Rumor has it that Xe is collaborating with Ov to produce a computerized Tic Tac Toe Game. Hey, why not get Steve Jobs in on that?
