  • HHS Nominee Daschle Pays $128,00 In Back Taxes

It is significant economic news when the Tom Daschle who was to bring the US into the Healthcare Promised Land, appears, like Timmie Geithner, to have had significant tax lapses. It also seems pretty incredible that both Geithner and Daschle were apparently not properly vetted by the new Adminstration, a manifestation of incompetence on its own. Or they just don't care if these priviliged people pay their taxes:

"Former Sen. Tom Daschle, picked by President Barack Obama to lead his health reform efforts, recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press.
The White House acknowledged Friday that "some tax issues" had emerged in connection with the nomination, but a spokesman said the president is confident the former Senate Democratic leader will be confirmed as the new health secretary.
Daschle filed amended tax returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 to reflect additional income for consulting work, the use of a car service and reduced deductions for charitable contributions. He filed the returns after Obama announced he intended to nominate Daschle to head the Health and Human Services Department.
Most of the additional taxes resulted from unreported income from the use of a car service provided him by a close friend and business associate, Leo Hindery Jr. The unreported income for that service totaled more than $250,000 over three years.
Daschle also had unreported consulting income of $88,333, in 2007. He also had reductions to charitable contributions totaling about $15,000 over the three years covered, according to the Senate Finance Committee document. The document, marked "Confidential Draft," is a committee statement concerning Daschle's nomination."

It seems like paying your taxes is a Fee charged to be in the Cabinet. Be interesting to see if Daschle has to withdraw, unlike Geithner who had the powerful Financial Industry and other Bailoutees solidly behind him.

Atually what Obama is doing is introducing a new method of collecting taxes. Appoint someone to a cabinet position, and the person seems motivated suddenly to pay his/her taxes. Without these appointmentss the IRS would be 150K or so poorer.

I think the next step should be to expand the number of members in the Cabinet.

Seriously this country and its leaders are unfuckingbelievable.

Gives new meaning to the term limousine liberal. I guess when the good folks of South Dakota kicked him out of their state he moved onto NYC to join the rest of those limousine liberals.

          1. Inquiring minds would love to see the list of clients for that limo service and whether they also have avoided taxes. Amazing that these investigative trails are not pursued by the Media. I wonder if the IRS is taking a look at that to see what other WA Notables are scamming their taxes. The trail looks smokin' hot.
          2. Does the IRS have a Special Office for Cabinet Nominees and other well-connected Elite Deadbeats and Taxcheats which kindly and gently processes their tax problems? Sure seems so. I wonder how long it would take the average taxpayer to so easily clear up their tax errors?
