Seems subtle enough at first.... we'll just take these sites no one likes and
put them over here in their own little box. Problem is, the box keeps getting
bigger and the slope steeper and more slippery.

Is this really what you want?
This is not a public square. This is a private club. Some conversation is appropriate here and other conversation is not. For the most part the members decide what is and isn't.

The model is you local neighborhood bar and grill. This bar and grill is specifically for visitors who want to talk about finance and economics. It's and upscale bar and grill, that serves quality information and provides a well managed environment for constructive debate and plain old hanging out. If guests want to reference a speech at Davos, or an article in a web site or blog that takes the time to verify sources, great. Otherwise the other members are going call out the bad reference. A member who wants to reference and quote conspiracy sites is making a mistake. They are in the wrong bar and grill.

If a member starts calling members names, the bouncer shows up to tell them to pipe down. If they don't he throws them out.

      See how it works?
      Ed.

Maybe iTulip needs to create a new Wingnut category (notice I make no distinction between right or left wingnuts) to supplant the Rant and Rave category. That way the trolls can duke it out as they please and the rest of us can discuss and seek to understand what is really happening. For me, reality is plenty disturbing ... Stridency does nothing to improve the discussion.
well put. rush limbaugh is lurking.
whatever happened to the spinning head of the guy with the bald spot on the old itulip?

EJ/Fred(s), thanks for stepping into this thread and performing triage. For me, this was an awful discussion. That said, I don't see iTulip as a club. Especially not a private club. This is a public square with rules like any public place. Perform your duties like any policeman in a public place and never feel the need to declare the square private because we have rules of civility. I've disagreed with almost every regular poster in my time on iTlulip, but I would defend this place as one of the most open, public forums I've had the privilege to participate. If I have a fear for iTulip, my great fear is that we'll become a club. There are some great minds at iTulip, and more arriving every day, we can't let these little skirmishes deter us from the idea that this is an open and public forum.

a public square is financed with public dollars vs itulip is financed with its members' dollars... to pay for a place to talk about the topics we're here to talk about in the way we're expected to talk about them per the FAQ. the consitent enforcement of these rules is the whole reason that there are great minds here and open discussion... but not too open

What is it that draws you so irresistibly to be the most vocal proponent for the "iTulip exclusive Club" idea? You have been ever since I can remember, along with your vigorous "troll-watching" activity, and your "competitor website spam ideas watching" roles? I for one disapprove of the extent to which you wish to become the roving policeman for these exclusivist interpretations of iTulip. I agree, the editors seem to be leaning towards your view, but there are others of us who have a much more "wide open" idea of what should be allowed here, even if the place is to some (or even large) extent funded by subscribers. As you see, the poster above you had a different vision of this place and you have to cohabit with his vision also, no? This place can exist largely within the framework which iTulip will endorse, and still leave a quite wide range of interpetations, and I would note that your interpretation is only one among many.

on the question of who is and is not credible, it's a judgment call. maybe this will help.
