  • ‘Soviet’ Britain swells amid the recession

    http://business.timesonline.co.uk/to...cle5581225.ece
PARTS of the United Kingdom have become so heavily dependent on government spending that the private sector is generating less than a third of the regional economy, a new analysis has found.
The study of “Soviet Britain” has found the government’s share of output and expenditure has now surged to more than 60% in some areas of England and over 70% elsewhere. ...

Across the whole of the UK, 49% of the economy will consist of state spending, while in Wales, the figure will be 71.6% – up from 59% in 2004-5. Nowhere in mainland Britain, however, comes close to Northern Ireland, where the state is responsible for 77.6% of spending, despite the supposed resurgence of the economy after the end of the Troubles.

If this is true (and I have no reason to doubt it), how can UK possibly survive?

Britain is a nation of immigrants, always was.

Yeah, those bastard Angles, Celts, Jutes, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, French, Romans, Picts, Gaels, Irish, Scots, let's send them all home! Wherever that is...

T, are you trying to pull history on me like I dont know GB has had many different ethnic caucasion groups inhabit those islands and take them over? I bet you are one of those people who thinks that Israel should return all the land to the Palestinians "bc they were there first." No one says anything about the Normans taking over GB and we all know why, they were white like the anglos but people whine all day about the middle east and africa.

Just remember that immigration only goes one way, into white western nations. I am sorry but I do not want to completely see Sweden become all muslim in my lifetime, nothing agaisnt Islam but those immigrants always have a culture and country to go back to, The Swedes do not. Once their people and culture are gone, its gone.

Do not come with those stupid comments anymore.

I'll be posting the link to these famous last words to my friends who emigrated to either the emirates or the far-east in search of better opportunities in the last 15 years.

lol of course there are outliers along the curve, for exmaple the 500,000 british that live in the UAE etc. I do not mean to imply that "all" immigration goes one way of course it does not. Do I have to go as far as saying "most immigration goes into western nations" so that you can understand? I hope I do not have to do that. Rarely do you see western nation people moving en mass to non-western nations and setting up all danish or all swedish communities, unlike what happens in western nations. Please become more objectivist in your analysis as opposed to finding the few outliers along the bell curve.

For Example most chinese do not reach 5'9 ft tall but some chinese like Yao Ming reach 7'5. Should we conclude from this observation that "are you mad" Chinese are very tall! That is how you sound.

Immigration has existed for as long as human civilization has existed but not nearly in the same breath as the last 400 years or even last 60 years into western nations.

I believe people go where the money (read opportunity) is, or think it is. It has tended to be Europe and the US with the UK's resource or trade rich ex colonies (oil states, Singapore etc.)

                      Just follow the money.

I could agree with that hypothesis labasta. The next question is what allows those nations to have a higher per capita gdp. Is it culture? Religion liberalism? what is it. The Asian countries do quite well in mimicking western capitalism, well probably better than the west. An ourtlier to that is Japan which has vitrually zero immigration due to strict immigration laws, so you do not see poor nation citizens flooding into Japan.

                          die from London smog.

Like LA and Beijing, London's geography and climate (frequent temperature inversions) set it up to naturally accumulate smog. This used to be greatly amplified by the coal industry of the times.
