  • Icelandic government becomes first to be brought down by the credit crunch

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worl...it-crunch.html

The government of Iceland today became the first to be effectively brought down by the credit crunch.

After several nights of rioting over the financial crisis, Prime Minister Geir Haarde, surrendered to increasing pressure and called a general election for May.

A poll would not normally be held until 2011.

Haarde also revealed that he had been diagnosed with a malignant tumour of the oesophagus and would not seek re-election.

'I have decided not to seek re-election as leader of the Independence Party at its upcoming national congress,' he told a news conference.

The global financial crisis hit Iceland, which has a population 320,000, in October, triggering a collapse in its currency and financial system under the weight of billions of dollars of foreign debts incurred by its banks

The economy is set to shrink 10 percent this year and unemployment is surging.

Critics wanted Haarde, the central bank governor and other senior officials to resign.
Some senior figures in his party have also said they favour an early election, but Haarde had up to now vowed to defy plunging popularity and stay on.

Protests had been held weekly since the crisis broke last year, but since Tuesday have been held every night.

On Thursday, police used teargas on demonstrators for the first time since protests against the North Atlantic island's entry into the NATO alliance in 1949.

Special forces had to rescue Haarde from his car after he was surrounded by an furious mob hurling eggs and cans outside the government offices, in Reykjavik.

And all these weeks we've been wondering what makes Icelanders so much more peaceful than the Greeks, the Balts, the Bulgarians...

Is the poster krakknisse, Icelandic? I'd like to know if reports about the police response are correct.

They sound rather tame, you know from the standpoint of assessing potential state-violence, which is a big reason why this government fell and others facing similar economic pressures will not.

No, he's from another country in the vicinity. I thought I saw some signs that he was coy about mentioning which one, though you can work it out from context.

I'm on a small island inextricably linked to the UK. I was interested to see what happened in Iceland because of the likely similarity to what will happen here. (We have different blood in our veins to our more Latin European neighbours). Having regularly googled for blogs and news, I'm not much the wiser. It appears that the Icelanders mainly stand around in groups outside parliament lighting fires and singing, with occasional minor skirmishes breaking out with the police. How you manage without a convertible currency and and massively reduced income, I still don't know.

          Tim.

for example, the contrast between UAE and Iceland:

Angry street protests saw around 4,000 workers take control of a building in Jebel Ali, throwing stones and damaging cars. This prompted several thousand other protesters from different building projects and causing riot police to be deployed to disperse them using water cannons. A police helicopter was mobilized and filmed the scene in an effort to identify the ringleaders.

The authorities in the United Arab Emirates took the decision to deport the guilty ones with official, Humaid bin Deemas, telling reporters: “These strikers have crossed a red line that we cannot tolerate.” source
