    We're sold on Iceland-on-Thames. How do we play it?

      I'll sell you my house if you like Fred. It has easy access to the City of London if you're looking for front row seats....

        At least they aren't telling you how long you can shower..

        Apparently, things are so bad in Singapore that the government is encouraging people to shower less;

          He's a bit late with that call IMO. We pulled all of our life savings from the UK to the US at around $2 to the pound, at a time when many thought that sterling would appreciate further against the pound.

          But since I'm honest I'll admit we were bloody lucky. Sometimes it's good to be lucky !

                We play it by cashing in our air miles 9while they still exist) and take that weekend trip to London we have been holding back on because it was too expensive.

                  Well, I was promised "a currency event" in 2009.... I think a disorderly collapse of the GBP would fit the bill. Perhaps it would bring wry amusement to the Icelanders, who felt hard done by the Brits earlier.

                        Re: Jim Rogers on the UK !

                        I shorted Sterling back in April. It was comfortably at $2 back then. I've been a bear on Sterling for a very long time.

                        Rogers is very late in making this call. It amazes me that he never called it publicly because it was even more obvious than the doomsday scenario with the US Dollar. However, I feel that his recent views show that he had possibly thought this through a long time ago - especially his point that with oil reserves in the North Sea dropping so much, UK forex earnings will dwindle further.

                        He is actually being overly cautious in saying that Sterling will disappear in a decade. That's a joke I'm sure. It will be in the toilet way before then.

                        I don't really know what the best way to play Sterling's decline is. I think that back in late '07, one could have got some nice put options on Sterling but now the market may be pricing in some severe declines and the premiums may be too high.

                        Britain is fundamentally bankrupt and they will find it harder to find a saviour this time than in '76 when the IMF bailed them out.

                          bingo. who will bail them out... in order of least to most unlikely... usa (the imf was a proxy for the usa back when the usa had money)? china? japan?

                          everyone is broke and needs to spend. what's to keep the uk to reverting to its pre 1976 status? well... on the bright side, last time they invented punk rock.

                            The United States is fundamentally bankrupt as well.... what is the point. File into the currencies that have account surpluses like the Norwegian Krona, Swiss Franc and Jap Yen.... forever however long their surpluses last.
