Actually, I think it's SOP for an event like this.

They can render assistance in the form of assisting escort, "eyes on" situational assessment, and if necessary to shoot down the aircraft if it poses a threat.

I recall an incident quite a few years ago in Europe with a business jet that had lost coms with ATC, I believe the aircraft was suspected to have lost environmental control, everyone onboard was unconscious or dead, and the aircraft was on autopilot, NATO aircraft escorted it until it crashed in the Atlantic, but were prepared to destroy the aircraft if it threatened a populated area.

In regards to this specific incident, I think this Marc Schrenker fella has read too many James Bond and John Grisham novels.

I hope the manhunt and trial becomes a media frenzy.

This story has pure awesome written all over it.

It should be, but it didn't work for a particular day

(After 9:03 a.m.) September 11, 2001: Secret Service Wants Fighters Scrambled from Andrews; None Are Ready to Fly

A few minutes after 9:03 a.m., a squadron pilot at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland (just ten miles from Washington), hears that two planes have crashed into the WTC. He calls a friend in the Secret Service to see what’s going on. The Secret Service calls back, and asks whether Andrews can scramble fighters. According to weapons officer, Major Dan Caine, who takes this call, the Secret Service agent then tells them “to stand by and that somebody else [will] call.” Apparently anticipating the need to launch fighters, one commander has already started preparing weapons for the fighters. However, the weapons are located in a bunker on the other side of the base, and the process takes time. Senior Master Sergeant David Bowman, 113th Wing munitions supervisor, says, “We were doing it as fast as we could, because for all we knew the terrorists were getting ready to hit us.” It normally takes three hours to get weapons from the storage sheds and load them onto the fighters. However, on this occasion, it is later claimed, it only takes 45 minutes. The fighters don’t take off though for about another hour and a half (see (10:42 a.m.) September 11, 2001). Whilst the crew at Andrews are unloading missiles onto a flatbed trailer, Dan Caine answers another phone call from someone in the White House, requesting armed fighters over Washington. Caine says: “I could hear plain as day the vice president talking in the background. That’s basically where we got the execute order. It was ‘VFR (Visual Flight Rules) direct.’” Meanwhile, there are also three unarmed F-16 fighters assigned to the Andrews base on a training mission 207 miles to the south in North Carolina. These are not recalled until much later, and don’t reach Washington until 10:45 a.m. [Aviation Week and Space Technology, 9/9/2002; Filson, 2003, pp. 78,84] NORAD commander Major General Larry Arnold has said, “We [didn’t] have any aircraft on alert at Andrews.” [MSNBC, 9/23/2001] However, prior to 9/11, the District of Columbia Air National Guard [DCANG] based at Andrews had a publicly stated mission “to provide combat units in the highest possible state of readiness.” Prior to 9/11, the mission statement was posted on the DC National Guard’s public website. Shortly after 9/11, this mission statement is removed and replaced by a DCANG “vision” to “provide peacetime command and control and administrative mission oversight to support customers, DCANG units, and NGB in achieving the highest levels of readiness.” [District of Columbia Air National Guard, n.d.]

I think this guy is more than likely such an amatuer that he'll get himself caught in plain sight (grocery store, bar etc.) or he's such a pro that he's already out of the country, sitting on a beach and sipping on a gooey blender drink with an umbrella in it.

I hate to dash your hopes, but I don't think you're going to get your media frenzy out of this one. Not to worry though, I'm sure there will be more similar to this in the future.

Another riches story gone very bad/sad with more investor losses.

The ending probably will not be good.

He has been found and is in safe custody.

This isn't even the first - one of them tried to fake being a 'jumper' off a bridge:

            http://www.nypost.com/seven/06102008...ers_114897.htm

But of course this one waited until he was already convicted.

Apparently he didn't leave enough money (or pay enough advance retainer) to get a good enough lawyer to stay in his penthouse.

Apparantly this guy was involved in 21 lawsuits and filed for BK in 2003. Who in their right mind would invest with someone of this type of character?

I wouldn't even drink a beer in a bar with this type of individual.

Why again why would someone invest money with this guy?

In 1990 Schrenker does 16 days on a stolen property theft charge, apparently gets probation and has the record expunged.

In 1991 Schrenker faces a forced Chapter 7 liquidation petition, claims it was filed fraudulently and blames his fraternity brothers for taking cards out in his name.
In 2001 he was terminated from Multi Financial Securities (churning was the allegation).
In 2003 he faces IRS allegations that he failed to report income and purchased "$29,000 in audio/visual equipment and orders $16,000 worth of landscaping services, provided to his home" that he seemed to be claiming as business expenses.
In 2003 he again faces a Chapter 7 liquidation action, again claiming the action was fraudulently filed. (Forged signature).

Re: Pilot wanted on financial fraud charges bails out of plane to fake death

Prosecutors allege Schrenker intentionally communicated a false distress message from his private plane and caused the Coast Guard "to attempt to save lives and property when no help was needed."

He also is charged with willfully damaging, destroying or wrecking an aircraft.

Indiana prosecutors charged Schrenker on Tuesday with one felony count each of an unlawful act by a compensated adviser and unlawful transaction by an investment adviser. Authorities said they believe Schrenker defrauded investors through three companies he owns that are based in an Indianapolis, Indiana, suburb.

Indiana officials have agreed to allow the federal case against Schrenker to proceed before seeking to have him extradited there, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office in the Northern District of Florida.

No but pretending you are dead while doing it really pisses a lot of rescue dogs off.

                          He tried to correct that

Authorities said they discovered him incoherent and bleeding profusely from apparently self-inflicted cuts to his wrist and left forearm in a likely suicide attempt. He probably would not have survived another hour without medical help, officials said.
