Here's a new variation on an old idea. This originally started life many, many years ago as a way to unlock Central Asia oil. Ship it via the Caspian into Iran for refining and domestic use in the the north of that country, while equivalent crude is exported from Iran's own production on the coast.
Now think about this. You are India. You are going to buy natural gas from Russia. You will receive this gas from Iran [presumably either via undersea pipeline or LNG tanker]. Then you wake up one morning and notice that Gazprom has cut off gas to Europe in the middle of the winter.

TEHRAN – Tehran and Moscow has reached an initial agreement to swap gas, Iranian Oil Minister Gholam-Hossein Nozari revealed here on Friday.
The minister said negotiations are underway to reach a final deal.
“The two sides are continuing their negotiations,” Nozari told the Mehr News Agency on Friday.
Based on the agreement Iran will receive gas from Russia in the north and will export the same amount for Russia in the Persian Gulf.
“In case of finalization Iran will receive gas on the northern borders and deliver the same amount to (foreign) customers in the south.”
The minister said Iran is also negotiating with Turkey on gas transit.
However, he said, “Iran has not yet reached an agreement with Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan on gas swapping.”
Iran plans to increase its share of the global gas markets by swapping 50 million cubic meters of natural gas from the Central Asian countries. The Construction of Sarakhs-Jask gas pipeline is also in line with this plan
