  • Rogers fund?

Like Jim Rogers, he talks about this a lot:-
    Rogers International Commodities Index®
    Question...........What is it?
Is it like an energy trust like Penn West but for Commodities?
    Anyone got one?

It's a broad commodities index that he created about ten years ago. The website gives you the percentage breakdown of commodities in the index, for example crude oil is 21%.

For a while there was a way to invest in the index via an unusual futures contract called a TRAKRS, but I think the company that was running the TRAKRS got into financial trouble. Not sure about that.

At any rate, as of late 2007 there are four ETNs based on the index. RJI is the whole index, RJA is agriculture, RJN is energy, and RJZ is metals.

I have positions in the three underlying indices. Since commodities have taken a beating in recent months, I am down in all of them, especially energy. Should have taken more seriously the fact that commodities were not one of iTulip's recommendations for where to park your money. Ah well, I still think they will go up over the longer term.

Of course there's all the risks associated with Exchange-Traded Notes to worry about as well. The backing bank is Swedish Export Credit Corporation, which is owned by the Swedish government. Maybe they'll be ok.

RJA will be the best play you can make this year.

The one worry I have here was best expressed by Jesse over ar his site--All these commodities are priced in London, New York or Chicago. He seemed to imoly that this system could not be trusted to deliver honest pricing based on fundamentals in the market and monetary system.
I do worry that too few players may be able to suppress returns in these sectors.
          I would appreciate any feedback.

I would consider this applicable to any investment these days. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

I too have recently researched this index. Its my understanding that Jim Rogers designed this index because he was not happy that the CRB index was overly weighted in energy. He designed his index to fairly weight the other commodities.

                How do you buy it?
                Is it like a stock?
                Who "Owns" it
                Can they go bust?

I think this is what you're looking for:

HAP seeks to replicate as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of The RogersTM—Van Eck Hard Assets Producers Index, which was developed in concert with international investor Jim Rogers and is viewed by many as the definitive global benchmark for commodity equities.
