What are the dynamic elements that such models model?

Flows of funds?
Various liquidity sources and sinks?
Differential equations?
Difference equations?
Purely statistical? (is Niederhofer on this web page?)
Excel?
C++?
Mathematica?
Simulate-able (or is that simulable) Mind maps?

Want to share?
although I suppose I'm more interested in the derivation than the equations or model.

I realize this is a tall order - we're dealing with some very vague issues.
