On the Titanic the band played to the very end....at least in the movies which begs the question, what movie are we in

I vote for "The Last Waltz"...

I think there are times in history when an impending reality can be so eclipsing --so anathema to the status quo-- that denial is the only available psychological response, especially among those with the most to lose, the so-called elite, our feckless leaders.

I understand the theme of this year's Davos confab is 'Shaping the Post-Crisis World'. Post-crisis? Mid-crisis perhaps? The end-of-the-beginning-crisis? Even the bumper sticker is an exercise in denial. The crisis hasn't been navigated yet. How presumptuous to postulate a post-crisis world until we get there (God willing.) Then the ultimate hidden inference glossed by today's elite: shaped by whom? Of course we know who THEY think the shapers are going to be. But quite possibly we haven't yet met the shapers. And more than likely it ain't Bono. Achtung baby!

I'm not a student of Fellini but I suspect there's an appropriate film in his oeuvre. The phantasmal in the midst of chaotic decay :p

Did they invite Bernie Madoff to give the keynote address?

They did but with all the bad press they decided to cancel, or more likely postpone, his participation to a later time
Otherwise there was no problemo with Bernie

It IS sinking but there WILL be survivors, just not the majority of us

what movie are we in
We're in Pinks movie. He became that which He hated and feared, where the most vulnerable rose up against the defeater only to be defeated again

My take is: accept my losses and remember that this is the world we live in. So, lets find another wave to ride (with lots of luck) and hope to live free and sane another day, and who knows, we may rise again

Re: When are they going to stop re-arranging the deck chars..

One of the more optimistic Titanic indicators is that members of the Elite are now being thrown out of the Lifeboats. Madeoff and his "clients" are Exhibit 1. And there are other funds and Members Of The Elite for whom there are no Bailout Funds. So, Resources are now limited; only the Well Connected will be bailed out. This is a Trickle Up Process, the higher up you are on the Influence Ladder the more likely to be bailed out. Of course, when Barry O moves in the list will change and the Influential will be somewhat but not totally different.

There is not a doubt in my mind that when Paulson and Cashn'carry saw that $350BILLION coming they were makin' a list of the Influential and checkin' it twice. Barry O's transition team will be doing the same.

Which raises another question. Did Madeoff make any attempt to get TARP/FED funds either directly or through the Usual Wall Street Suspects? Seems most likely he would have and when there was no place for him and his in the Lifeboat..........................

This might also explain FOX and BLOOMBERG interest in Fed/Treasury activities via FOI requests. Maybe Murdoch and Forever Mayor Until President Bloomberg are miffed no $$$ for them or want to squeeze some of the High and Mighty Bailed Outees.

I would not bank on this. Somewhere between the SIPC, the SEC's epic negligence and Schumer's frantic machinations, a pot of money will emerge.

I'm going to offer a prediction that Schumer, in return for Madoff's largesse to the DNC, kept the SEC off Madoff in some manner or form. Of course a lot of deep pockets and traditional Dem contributors got screwed as a result. I'm not sure what form it will take, but I think Schumer is going to agitate for some kind of reparation.

Hey the Jewish National Congress got the Swiss banks to cough up. This is a veritable cake-walk.
