  • Is Platinum better than gold now?

Platinum is priced at nearly the same as gold, it's 30X rarer, and has industrial uses (yeah, I know mainly in cars, but the new fuel cell batteries use it as well, so that still applies longer-term).

Seems to me it could be both an inflationary hedge and useful if and when the economy recovers.

    Opinions?

I like it too but not so easily obtainable in size. Anyone know of a bullionvault in platinum?
It's Economics vs Thermodynamics. Thermodynamics wins.

The risk is obviously higher, due to supply and demand considerations. Keep in mind that the auto industry is a large user of Platinum.

For my part, I think it is sensible to have a small position (few coins) in Platinum as it is less likely to be "confiscated" by governments than Gold or Silver in the event SHTF really hard.

Having said that, I prefer Palladium at this juncture on a pure 5-Year technical analysis:

I think Rhodium is also worth considering at this point ...

Agreed, but I think the spread on Rhodium is something like 30% (15% buy and 15% sell) at Kitco!

I am not aware of any Rhodium coins in Canada, I think they are available in the US but in extremely limited supply.

Yes - Rhodium is tough to get. American Elements makes a coin. A few scrap metal dealers melt down catalytic converters to get the platinum, palladium and bits of rhodium. I have a small sheet of Rhodium - but it's not for sale

My advice is likewise: "hang on to it".

The main problem I see with Rhodium is that it is so risky that only a small portion of your assets should be invested in this metal: i.e. 1% or 2% no more.

This coupled with very high spread fee vs spot, make this metal unattractive when compared to Palladium or Platinum which have much narrower spreads.

Ow! The chart hurts my eyes! Why, Largo, why?

(I bought some Pd earlier this year; I'm trying to forget I did that until after a major inflation... or, if a major inflation never comes, I'm trying to forget I did that altogether.)

                  Is that geological occurrence rates?

Since most of the Gold ever mined is still here, but almost all the Pt ever mined is gone, that 30X is a highly, highly suspect number.

ASH, at some point this year I was 22% Platinum . You can imagine my excitement during 2008.

These coins are now in the Bank of Sealy and will go to my kids when they are older so I can say: "Ah good times, good times".

To answer your question as to why: Glad I am not alone though...thanks!;)
