They are not being fed anything - theyr'e getting what they want.

    the public doesn't want information.

    The women want soaps
    the men want sports

I bet there's more discussion about Desperate Housewives and the 49ers or the latest UFC than all the financial discussion on the internet and all the news channels and shows put together.

Everyone wants spice, drama, stimulation and strife in everything they consume.

Forget about getting "informed". real wisdom ain't dramatic. Ain't sexy. Ain't gonna sell, ain't gonna happen, noway, nohow, nowhen, just NO.

If they are being mis-informed it's because for decades they rewarded broadcasters that lie. Reward the behavior, get more of it.

most of the "news" these days (which is a small fraction of the mass of signals) is entertainment

And 99% of political and financial "commentary" is telling people what they already agree with, because if you challenge them they STOP WATCHING. For every interview with a Faber or Rogers there's 1,000 with CEOs telling you their stock is great (while they sell truckloads the same day)

If it weren't for the internet things would be a thousand times worse.

      ^^

      This!

My wife had a conversation with a lady the other day. The lady says her and her husband plan to sell their home, buy a "bigger one" so they can flip it and get money because "things will not be bad for much longer, by next year the home prices will go back up".

These people are willingly sipping the kool aide.

I think it is vital to follow the MSM, precisely because we need to know what the insane/blind crowd is thinking. I take your post in that spirit.

Nice. I think we should be trying to estimate how long it will take for J6P to realize that this won't all blow over. That disillusionment could be truly terrifying.

The only thing that had me in tears was how pretentious, self-congratulatory, and long that teacher's story was. Doesn't anyone work for a living anymore? Who has time to read all this stuff?

            Here's a crazy idea, how about we teach people;

-take a page from our forefathers and build up savings before marrying.
            - don't have kids when you're broke or a paycheck away from it. Have kids to give to the kids, not to entertain yourself. The world doesn't need more people. Keeping them poor and insecure isn't doing them any favors.
            - don't spend everything you make and save for a rainy day.
            - don't be jealous or resentful towards people who were wiser than you and made better decisions. Learn from them.
            - if you have two incomes try to live on one and save the other.
-wake up and realize that you can't have double the stuff your parents did as real incomes are barely what they were 35 years ago. Something had to give.
-labor isn't a dirty word. We've created a have/have not mentality that is scornful of "real" work. It's created a lottery system where you either make $45/hour or $8/hour.

Andrew, if you can stand it, then turn it on and watch it. I stood if for many years, but for the past few, watching the major networks' news, the local news, or CNBC invariably irritate me to the point that to continue would equate to my being being a masochist in the non-sexual sense. Give yourself 30 more years and perhaps you will see my point. I'll leave it to you to look for and assign any real value to the majority of the MSM. I think almost all of it is no-information, disinformation, or misinformation--one of those should be correct.

with you brother but here's the thing...

-take a page from our forefathers and build up savings before marrying.
can't keep the kids in the right clothes to get respect if i do that.

here, here! kids are not pets for rich people.

                - don't spend everything you make and save for a rainy day.
duh! but why doesn't everyone do that? stupid? gotta be more to it than that.

                good luck!

                - if you have two incomes try to live on one and save the other.
good advice for the past 10 yrs. now?

-wake up and realize that you can't have double the stuff your parents did as real incomes are barely what they were 35 years ago. Something had to give.
how much did a 1mb internet connection or a car with abs cost your parents 35 yrs ago? oh, forgot. no internet or abs then. nevermind.

                high value work = $$$, low value = $

                same as always.

Wow... just Wow... This is the biggest POS article I have read on here in quite some time. It is so wrong on so many levels I just can't believe it.

First of all I just want to say I grew up dirt poor.

                      Here are my biggest griefs with this article;

Just because you are poor/down and out/etc. doesn't mean you can't afford to bathe...there are things as $1.00 stores and discount/second hand grocers that sell cheap soap and if its really bad there is always the Y (if there are no soap dispensers at the shower use the one in the bathroom)
Being poor is not an excuse to for being disgusting.

As stated above there are discount grocers for really cheap food, but if you can't afford dented cans of no name soup or split packaging of ramen I suggest you march yourself and your family over to your local church group/soup kitchen/etc. If you are hungry there are always places to find food.
Same for clothes.... I love the part in the article about giving Ambercrombie clothes... thats rich.

I would have loved to focus on school alone, but if you are legally old enough to work and it needs to be done then work. There are jobs out there if you lower your standards enough... even in tough times. I started my first real job at 12 shoveling shit on a farm and never stopped working since..... fortunately I don't shovel shit anymore.... Late 20s now.

JC!!! doesn't anyone save money anymore???

Finally this is the reason why I think public education just plain sucks. This sounds like the stuff I used to do when I was in K through like 3rd grade. I remember bing bored out of my gourd with how easy school was until I got really lucky and received a special "underprivileged" scholarship to receive a private education after my 6th grade year in school. I remember going from bored out of my mind and causing trouble to something like 2-4 hours of homework on topics that a typical public school kid won't learn until HS.

I am not tooting my own horn, and I am not some success story or miracle. I just grew up in a family that had some tough times and we had to do what was needed to be done to get by. Tough times are the things my Great-Grandparents and Grandparents had to do to get by during the depression.

I don't know maybe this is why I hate people... Self-Loathing, Pathetic, Self-Entitlement, and Laziness.

                      Rant Off.

I apologize for any poor grammar or misspelled words..... can happen when you get a little too emotional about a topic.

After HS... (it was private and I also recieved an "underprivelaged" scholarship to attend it as well) I recieved a partial scholarship to college and worked FT once the scholarship was finished to pay for college and come out debt free. I now work as an accountant/HR admin (long story) while its not what I call an ideal or an enjoyable job it pays the bills and provides me with the freedom to explore my hobbies. I am still too young IMO to know how I will turn out. Ideally I don't need/want to be rich... I just want to be happy and comfortable.

Jim & Ash - one thing that I've noted in particular is that the local network affiliate news broadcasts (Bay Area) are careful to separate the 'mortgage crisis' from the 'recession' as if the two are not really related.

It could be nothing - it could be that the consensus in the newsroom is that the two storylines are separate, especially because the mortgage crisis in California is so severe. I am working on finding out about that and wonder if we have any media employee co-reader/subscribers that could shed some light as well?

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but these responses are deeply saddening. Sure, perhaps some parents really messed up. Perhaps some were blind sided by two incomes losing jobs or long term illness. I don't care - the innocent deserve at least a bit of sympathy here.

We're talking about kids who are 11 to 14, who just had their lives turned upside down in a way they probably don't understand. Children whose parents are probably in over their heads and totally lost. Children who may not have anyone around them mentally functioning or who understand how to survive in the state they either put themselves in or found themselves in. These probably aren't people who grew up poor and know how to survive (or have friends who have dealt with this type of hardship before).

We're talking about a teacher who is in new position, who hasn't had to deal with this before. Someone who probably entered the field out of compassion and desire to help people grow up -- and who just discovered some of her students had their world thrown into chaos.

Jesus. We can be as indignant as we want, but I how that if we ever find ourselves in a similar situation, someone has the sympathy or just plain humanity to help point us in the right direction again. I'm not talking about giving handouts or ignoring reality - I mean actions like notifying parents about programs they can take advantage, programs and life style changes to help people put their lives back together, etc.

Re: Student: "Mrs. K, I don't have lunch money" - Where does the Money Go..

I'm a parent and you wouldn't believe how parents waste money on Lunches for children.

My child tells me what Kids eat at lunch.

Most Children BUY a Carton on Milk EVERY DAY or bring a juice box- Parents have forgotten how easy (and cheap) it is to fill a Thermos with Milk and no Milk Carton gets thrown away.

Meanwhile Schools talk about recycling and saving the environment.

Parents have forgotten that Left overs from last nights Dinner make an excellent lunch.

Parents have forgotten that a Bag of Frozen vegetables can be purchased for $3-$4 dollars and supplies a vegetable serving for 10-20 lunches. You can make a Peanut Butter sandwich for $0.30- $0.40.

Consider how much money would be saved if every child brought their own lunch to school.
