  • Platinum now cheaper than Gold

    Gold Bid $822.50
    Platinum Bid $816.00

Auto bailout failure & continuing auto demand falling off a cliff, no doubt.

Gold looks well overvalued compared to platinum and silver, must be lots of safe haven buying:confused:

I have read in the past that platinum is an industrial metal and silver is a hybrid between an industrial metal and an inflation hedge. In the current environment, one would expect gold (a 4th major currency) to outperform industrial metals. I'm not sure I would consider it "overvalued." Thoughts?

I would tend to agree and moreover, think gold is undervalued and short term sentiment is fixated upon the bond market indicating inflation unlikely - erroneously.

Given today's conditions, my opinion is that gold today is a far better deal than when I started buying at $460 over three years ago because the financial calamity, then just a theory, has actually materialized today, yet the price has barely begun to reflect what is to come.

Just shows that rarity has nothing to do with price.

Platinum coins are basically impossible to find at this point. Kitco posted 1oz eagles about two months ago and I ordered some. The next day these were removed from the list of available items. The wait was long but I did receive them two weeks ago.

As for bars, kitco has 1oz bars listed at the bottom of the page
                https://online.kitco.com/bullion/completelist.html

Apmex just listed 1oz bars but says the ship date is end of Jan. '09 http://tinyurl.com/62pl6j

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the image is of a 1/2oz coin. So the mint is selling 1oz of platinum (2 of these coins) for about $2,500? That is some amazing mark up if you can get it - wow!

Correction - there are two coins in the set. So, 1oz in total for the $1,200+

Gee, you think they're not so popular at that price?

The coin is a 10th anniversary special edition, hence cannot be compared with the price of bullion (For my part, I would never buy something like this as the spread is simply ridiculous).

I think Palladium is a safer bet at this juncture:
