It's taken a surprisingly long time for the "silent recruiter" to kick in but apparently here it is .

My burg reportedly has a shot at yet another prison to join the sprawling complex already here. At the same time significant early release of thousands of prisoners is being debated at the state level to reduce costs.

Life in a crumbling hegemon. Colorful if nothing else.

Anybody know whose 'playing' at the Coliseum this week?

It's why my dad enlisted in the Marines in 1980. Economy sucked, he was married, needed a job, market was tight, and instead of being a b*tch he enlisted in the Marines to support his family, which is the job of the man of the house, regardless of what the job is.

That still doesnt give someone the right to take away someone else's property (notably their life), without due process of such.

If you take away someone else's right to life due to an act of war, why should they honor your own?

I can imagine ricket standing in a trench in World War II fighting for the British, and he hops out and approaches a German soldier and attempts to interrogate him and read him what he's accused of. The German soldier gives him a curious look and then shoots him in the head.

That's the reward side of the perceived risk/reward ratio. The perceived risk side has changed as well. In the last 12 months, more US Marines died in motorcycle accidents than in combat in Iraq. (Of course, while casualty rates are dropping in Iraq, they are rising in Afghanistan.) Regardless, my point is that the perception of risk is dropping at the same time that the relative value of the reward is rising.
