  • BMW in Crisis!!!!!!

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...aspx?AR=236253

Note that BMW doubled their car production from 1999 to 2007. Note they now admit that their "Lease holders" couldn't afford to BUY the cars thus they leased them to players in the "FIRE".

Personaly this news cheers me no end, i been cut up buy "Lease hire lossers" for years. Normaly in a BMW or Merc, mid range item usally a Turbo Diesel.

6 months ago i had one ass-hole driving a NEW £50K M3 almost drove me off the road. This 23 year old drug dealer is now safley nicked & his dream lease hire is BACK at BMW HQ.

A "Flushing" period is now coming i think.

I've heard this from friends that work for BMW dealerships:

NEVER buy a BMW that's past the free maintenance warranty period - parts & labor will eat you alive, no matter how much gold you've hoarded.

German engineering - awesome when it works, expen$$$$ive when it breaks . . .

Now I don't want to jinx myself but I'm driving a 95 M3 with 167,000 miles and the only thing this baby wants is a half quart of oil every 1000 miles. M3s have hand built motors and are known to be almost bulletproof with the exception of having the thirst for oil.

My other vehicle is a 88 4runner with 170,000 miles. My toyota has the bulletproof 4banger under the hood and also likes a little oil once in a while.

I figure these two heeps will go for 500,000 miles each on the original engine without need for a rebuild! If I coast around, they both get 20-30 mpg.

An ex-co worker bought a brand new M5 in 1999.

2 weeks after the warranty expired, he developed a crack in the engine block: $12K to repair.

              Ouch!

Those era BMW's have been known to have very tight piston ring clearances. Maybe the M3's have looser clearances - in any case, watch out for excess oil consumption through valve seals or piston ring blowby - this can take out the catalytic converter due to oil fouling/clogging.

Agreed. Standard transmissions of that era were a pleasure to drive.

My bet is for the Toyota (if a manual transmision) to achieve this. The BMW might get to 200K without either a valve seal or a piston ring replacement.

Unless you're lucky, no torque converter in an AT will last that long. Not to mention the fact that AT usually shifts too low in the RPM band, accelerating wear on piston rings, valve seals, and cylinder head gaskets.

Both are standard. I think the M3 can make it but won't find out. I'm with Metalman and will sell the 95 for a hardly used half off 08!

                    everyone loves a car thread!

bmw 3 series (including m) is bulletproof. not like anything else bmw makes. it's a 2002 iterated on for 20+ years... like a camry or corolla except FUN! check the consumer reports on 3 series bmw... better than toyota. can't say the same for other bmw ware.
