  • Russian analyst predicts decline and breakup of U.S.

This aligns pretty closely with other forecasts I've been reading regarding the United States in the next 5+ years. Not a single one of them is very positive.

    http://en.rian.ru/world/20081124/118512713.html
MOSCOW, November 24 (RIA Novosti) - A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily Izvestia published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse."
The paper said Panarin's dire predictions for the U.S. economy, initially made at an international conference in Australia 10 years ago at a time when the economy appeared strong, have been given more credence by this year's events.

When asked when the U.S. economy would collapse, Panarin said: "It is already collapsing. Due to the financial crisis, three of the largest and oldest five banks on Wall Street have already ceased to exist, and two are barely surviving. Their losses are the biggest in history. Now what we will see is a change in the regulatory system on a global financial scale: America will no longer be the world's financial regulator."

When asked who would replace the U.S. in regulating world markets, he said: "Two countries could assume this role: China, with its vast reserves, and Russia, which could play the role of a regulator in Eurasia."
Asked why he expected the U.S. to break up into separate parts, he said: "A whole range of reasons. Firstly, the financial problems in the U.S. will get worse. Millions of citizens there have lost their savings. Prices and unemployment are on the rise. General Motors and Ford are on the verge of collapse, and this means that whole cities will be left without work. Governors are already insistently demanding money from the federal center. Dissatisfaction is growing, and at the moment it is only being held back by the elections and the hope that Obama can work miracles. But by spring, it will be clear that there are no miracles."

He also cited the "vulnerable political setup", "lack of unified national laws", and "divisions among the elite, which have become clear in these crisis conditions."

He predicted that the U.S. will break up into six parts - the Pacific coast, with its growing Chinese population; the South, with its Hispanics; Texas, where independence movements are on the rise; the Atlantic coast, with its distinct and separate mentality; five of the poorer central states with their large Native American populations; and the northern states, where the influence from Canada is strong.

He even suggested that "we could claim Alaska - it was only granted on lease, after all."

On the fate of the U.S. dollar, he said: "In 2006 a secret agreement was reached between Canada, Mexico and the U.S. on a common Amero currency as a new monetary unit. This could signal preparations to replace the dollar. The one-hundred dollar bills that have flooded the world could be simply frozen. Under the pretext, let's say, that terrorists are forging them and they need to be checked."

When asked how Russia should react to his vision of the future, Panarin said: "Develop the ruble as a regional currency. Create a fully functioning oil exchange, trading in rubles... We must break the strings tying us to the financial Titanic, which in my view will soon sink."

Panarin, 60, is a professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and has authored several books on information warfare.

Holy crap! I've been trying to figure out the American response to everything here, but didn't see the breakup of the US coming. I know I'd be glad to not have to share a country with Alabama, Mississippi and a few other cesspits.

Abe Lincoln could have saved us a lot of trouble by letting them secede. That way, by now Mexico would only be the second poorest country in North America.

I could see in a crisis situation regions of America turning on other regions along religious and political party lines. For example, I could envision the South blaming the North for electing a democratic president and causing the country's problems.

Of course, we already know that the problems are “baked in the cake” and there is very little that an incoming administration can do. However, try telling that to a significant majority that so illiterate or lacking basic fundamental thinking skills that they can not comprehend the difference between facts and a logic driven conclusion or political spin/propaganda. These people are easily manipulated and will drive the seeds of succession if/when it does occur.

We should be much more positive about the future. With the internet, it is much harder for a provocateur to whip up a storm by spreading lies and thus causing mayhem. It is much more to the positive that anyone who has a clear view, such as iTulipers, should do everything we can to keep the debate on an even keel.

No one will benefit from mayhem. No one.

And we Cesspitans would love to not be on the hook for the New York investment banks, GM, Ford, and Chrysler right now. We'll see who ends up poorer after this all shakes out. I'm betting we will have twice if not infinitely more auto companies down here as there are up there by then. What was your definition of cesspit again?

This is the one 'doomer' scenario that actually makes some sense to me. There is a segment of the population that isn't too happy with Obama being president.

If things go south bad (very deep recession), some people may start laying the blame at his doorstep. Especially if he gets government too involved in people's lives.

AHAHAHAH. Ok, there is my laugh riot for the day. China with it's vast USD dollar reserves with an economy with is pretty much 80% relying on selling to over consuming countries (namely, the US). And Russia, which basically goes through a revolution every 10 years and is surrounded by nations that it's half at war with. HMM! Great choice.

The "cesspitians" and the self-styled ubermenchen will both be surprised when they find out that the real tensions are between urban and rural, real economy versus FIRE economy, etc.

The red state blue state myth has people unaware of their countrymen only miles away– the urban office worker, suburban realtor, and small town coastal fisherman often live a stones throw from each other.

You assume that China can't print money like the US has done so the last 20 years?

They can do a lot of things, build a 200 station subway in every major city, build a national freeway grid, i can go on and on, build an electric car industry, replace all gasoline cars with electric cars, i can go on and on. lol

                          Panarin is a rabble rouser.

He hopes to be as Marx was to Lenin, with Putin.

[Dean] Igor Panarin … who first attracted widespread attention in the Russian elite with his 2003 book, ‘Information War and the Third Rome’ says that Moscow must ‘immediately’ move to create ‘a mechanism’ to ensure that the Russian media reflect Moscow’s interests, to repulse information attacks from abroad and to advance Moscow’s interests around the world. He proposes eight steps to achieve those goals [among them the] creation of a Russian council on public diplomacy, which Panarin says would include representatives of the government, the media, business, political parties and NGOs and possibly be headed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.”

It bemuses me somewhat that people seem to be taking this guy and his ideas seriously.

The Pacific coast is all Chinese people, the South is all Hispanic, and the central plains are all Native Americans? Rather simplistic and tenuous assumption upon which to base the idea of dividing up the country. There is less regional cohesiveness than he imagines. As Judas said:

And Russia is going to be the Eurasian financial regulator? Riiight.

Neither China nor Russia have the history, political stability, or even competence to run a global reserve currency.

The Euro is the only one that stands a chance, and even they are ready to split up at a moments notice.
