      Hey, here's something productive to do with all those festering swimming pools in the back yards of abandoned starter-castles in California, Las Vegas and Arizona.

      There's gotta be an energy security/green alternative government program handing out grants to fund this sort of thing. If not there's sure to be one soon...:rolleyes:

        Problems with algae cultures ;

        - Big investment needed
        - Considering needed investment, energy input, EROI still (far) below 1

        Still costly fuel but perhaps something for the future to fly planes on.
        For your future everyday transportation needs use an electric car and charge it with photovoltaics or wind.

          The report they mention, "The US Department of Energy Aquatic Species Program:Biodiesel from Algae" is available here.

          I have been thinking about doing this for a while but as a dry fuel or stove heating. I don't think it can compete commercially with oil at $50 but that may change if oil trebles again. It looked marginally better than other biodiesels from the figures I could put together. Still a new area though so there is room for improvement. It may make sense for home production on a small scale. There are big technical hurdles still.

          Let us know how you get on if you do try it.

            Mega,
            Check this out...

            http://www.alcoholcanbeagas.com/

            This guy figured out that there is plenty of feedstock to make alcohol for fueling vehicles, including kelp, cat tails, and even day old donughts (high starch and high surgar). In fact, before prohobition, the model-T was designed to run on alcohol created by farmers using their own feedstock from their farms. This guy figured out how to legally make your own alcohol for fuel in the United States, sells kits to modify your car to run on 100% alcohol, and recieve a $0.61 cent refund from the IRS for every gallon you make!

              Am thinking about it because the Average Family needs 1-2 aches to grow enough rap seed for 1 years car use. I am thinking that we almost certain to return to +£1.25 a litre for Diesel very soon.

              Need to print off and read & talk to some that have done it. I can see a system where you pump the stuff around like sola heating.....but just how do you get diesel from it?

                You mix it with hexane and press it out like olive oil. Not many experienced to talk to. I will pm you for a contact to give you what resources I have (links, a pricing spreadsheet).
