  • Woman Succumbs to "Greed", Loses $400K USD to Nigerian Scammers

    I am speechless.

...but convinced now that markets cannot be efficient. Take that Markov Theory!

At first I was wondering how someone that stupid could ever accumulate $400,000. Then I read the photo caption that explained she mortgaged her home and took out a lien on her car, in addition to raiding her HUSBANDS retirement account. Gee thanks dear.

"While most delete these malicious missives, Mrs. Spears fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Mrs. Spears insists, though that she's no easy mark -- she's an active registered nurse, CPR trainer, and reverend who has married many couples. She's even fluent in sign-language, which she uses to communicate with her husband."

It's a funny thing, people can have qualifications, have impressive jobs but it doesn't mean that they are smart. You can teach a monkey to ride a bike and juggle balls, plonk him back in the cage with the other monkeys is he really any smarter now than the others???

This is a local/regional story for me. It's interesting to see some people very sympathetic to her and others very critical. I think I would be more sympathetic if she hadn't continued to send more and more money. "Fool me once..." and all that.

One of the local articles starts out:

SWEET HOME, Ore. – Janella Spears doesn’t think she’s a sucker or an easy mark.
            Really? After all that?

It does go to show that you have to be extra vigilant these days. Can't tell you how many times my parents forward emails to me and I send them a link to snopes.com. They're smart people but, it seems like most of us are predisposed to believe what we see or hear. It takes extra effort to step back and carefully analyze.

The site 419 Eater is a lot of fun. And this scam-the-scammer scam is excellent - complete with pictures...
