  • the dollar and the dow

on feb 1, 2001 the dollar was at 120.45, now it's 86.50; while the dow has gone from 9910 to 12165. that's a little over 5 years. 86.5/120.45 says the dollar has lost 28.2%, the dow has risen 22.75% -- not quite enough to make up for the dollar's devaluation.

the s&p 1373 to 1378 - didn't make much there, so the dollar's fall really hurts.

    the naz100 2606 to 1724 -- oops.

[used pricing on the futures because the numbers were handy- so may differ from the spot quotes by a little.]

    Meaningless.

How do you know the other currencies didn't rise?

      Finster,

I sure hope you are correct about things as you see them, and I have no basis for disagreement with you. It is good for someone to keep taking the time to dispute perceptions. I for one cannot get enough of it if the end result is clearer perception.

if an american were planning a trip to europe, having had his money in the dow didn't protect him [enough] from the dollar's decline. and i doubt european hotel/restaurant prices declined [nominally] over the last 5 yrs. i suspect many other transactions would fall into the same category as such a trip.

And having his money in euros did protect him?

He'd be able to buy just as much with his euros today as on February 1, 2001?

What if he'd had yuan during the period instead? Gold?

What if we had selected our time frame to begin February 1, 1997 instead?
