  • Have the markets really gone downt that much?

They've gone down, for sure, but the dollar has significantly strengthed.

I think a big part of the market drop (as much as half of it, if not more) is just currency illusion.

I just calculated my balances in Canadian (I'm canadian), and in fact I've lost *nothing* since the market meltdown, at least in Canadian, which all my bills are in.

So the best investment strategy in this market is to be Canadian. lesson learned. Next time I'll know. ;)

Seems to me that if you believe in iTulip's explanation for the US dollar's recent strength -- and also the prediction that the strength will be temporary -- you have been granted a reprieve. Are you planning to sell, hold, or accumulate?

I recall EJ saying 2 to 6 months, but I can't find the reference.

Well, I sold all my American cash (20% of my porfolio), but I'll keep my equities (25% of my portfolio), and see how it goes. I accumulated during the crash, so my losses there are pretty minor.

The CAD may still depreciate more against the USD, and if it does, I may consider selling all my US equities and then transfer them into CAD and I may consider targeted investments in the Canadian market.

One thing I believe in, is that there is a good future for commodities, and Canada has some great commodity companies. I think we're seeing a very temporary depression in commodities. It's quite exciting, actually, because I missed the boat on that one and this is my chance to get on it.

I'm fairly optimistic about the future, and I've stayed in cash to wait for these panics, so I see them as an opportunity.
