The US Government is to spend up to $250 billion buying direct stakes in banks and other financial institutions under a controversial emergency plan which President Bush insisted today was "not intended to take over the free market but to preserve it".

Ahhhh, it all makes sense now. That Bush is a master of words.

I have been phoning California State Teachers' Retirement (CALSTRS) in Sacramento this afternoon, over and over again, and a taped message is all that I hear: "Our phone system is down due to technical difficulties. Please try again in one hour."

My micro-pension of $200 per month is quite important to me.

      Re: Doublespeak

I finally got through to CALSTRS, but their phone lines were jammed this afternoon.

Earlier to-day, I was reading from Marketwatch, London about the remark made by Gov. Arnold Swartznegger (sp?), Republican saying that teachers and state workers might not be paid on-time due California's budget problems..... So, I began to wonder about a lot of things: pensions, pay-cheques, CALSTRS solvency, who to trust, Republicans, Bush, the baby-boom, retirement, municipal bonds guaranteed by the State, the Panic of 2008, and many other issues.
