I think I'd buy coal companies...some of them are just so dirt cheap and I can't believe energy won't be more expensive in real terms...

One of my pick would be Cameco, the world's largest uranium producer.

It is trading at $16.45 and is down from its 52 week high of $52.33.

I'd get UEX, assuming the credit markets ever improve...

Phirang, since you are the "new era energy expert" what is your view on a good entry point for crude? Don't worry, I won't hold you to it!

I am dying to jump in, but seems to have lost my balls in the locker after a 50% drop in Natural Gas and Platinum earlier this year...

As a side note, it would be great if you guys (Phirang, Grapejelly et al.) would post their allocation under Jim's thread: "How ituliper is invested"...

Productive or potential farm and forest land.

As Mark Twain is alleged to have said: "Buy land, son, they're not making it anymore."

The future, as best I can see, will depend a lot more on good local produce than the 1,500 mile journey most food takes today to land on our plate.

Anyone investing in corporations dependent upon continuation of the Disneyland of a high-tech-industrial future with JIT delivery backed by cheap energy is welcome to it.

Ultimately, I'm interested in investing in local or regional real goods production and alternative energy opportunities.

Too soon to tell, because what we currently postulate might be valuable at that future time will be subject to whatever governmental horror show comes out of all this.

I would want to know who the "leaders" plan to punish and who they plan to reward before I made any decisions.

It depends on how I will fair in these times of bollocks . . .

                      Worst case:

At least one breeding pair of goats and chickens, along with the necessary accoutrements

1-2 acres of land with an accessable water supply

                      Intermediate case:

Smaller working farm amenable to pre-industrial cultivation techniques

                      Best case:

Full manor with 1-2 dozen serfs

Each peasant family shall be capable of producing at least one comely daughter who can be sold as a concubine/wife to the likes of MEGA as necessary (It's a win-win for us both!)

That is a erroneous premise. IMHO the correct question would be:

"What would you buy now in order to become obscenely rich after the crash?";)

Gold, because the short-squeeze of a Generation is now underway.

(Who says gold doesn't have a yield. It's yielding more than the FFR and soon more than the 10 Year)

Gold is the carry-trade currency that is going to burn and burn and burn people, because it's so damn hard to print more of it.

Yes, it seems there is the short squeeze of a generation of physical gold, but do you think it will last through the end of the crisis?

Are you ready to lease your physical gold??? Because if you don't, lease rates are irrelevant for you. Probably you know what happens to your physical gold after you lease it ...
