Even if you have the money to pas for a subscription for my investment newsletter, for you c1lue that may not be enough, because it would contravene my business ethic standards... I don't want to have any connections with arrogant siloviki:
    For me, it's quite simple:

There are two types of russians i know: ones with siloviki connections, and ones without. The former go there and have a great time, party in Holy Moskva, get civil engineering contracts in Chechnya, etc. The latter never leave the Free World. Why? Because, as they say, "too risky."

C1ue, be careful using russian phrases. The internal russian passports used to have Nationality in it. So the phrase "we don't punch your passport, we punch your face" was used in USSR by nationalists when russian jews were able to get Russian or Ukranian or whatever as a nationality instead of Jewish in their passports.

Good article if anybody interested in the topic:

I noticed that some of my russian friends who has nothing to do with siloviki did open businesses lately. They say it is much safer than it is used to be.

                ER,

I know, that's the point I was making:

$#* gets all of his Russia information from Monday Morning quarterback tales from friends. Yet still feels he knows what's going on.

The saying ties in very well with $#*'s hearsay based assertion that Russia sponsors national anti-Semitism. Maybe he's a buddy of Kasparov.

Re: Russia sees reserves tumble during September

Let me make some points, I know some Russians too.

                  1. You need to understand "siloviki" is not a social stratum, basically these are high level officials from old soviet "force" ministries. So they do not have any future as a group / class. They do not have basis in regions, only in Moscow/Petersburg. All the local folks you might label as "siloviki" are not, these are people who just aligned to the system. The only reason why the current system well "managble" comparable to Eltsin times is that all these people know how to work in this enviroement, they used to in USSR. Siloviki do not have any political / ideological interests and people who develop concepts for them. They just want to have power and money. That is why I believe they are temporaly folks.

                  2. If you think they took complete power it is not true. The whole Putin's idea is to have full control on the country and use liberals in economic part of the govement to "develop" the state. This is difficult and impossible path and such system is very unstable so there is a constant struggle in Kremlin, we just do not see it. Medvedev is a sign that liberals won this round.

You have revolution-counter revolution - new system. Russia today is in second phase.

The problem you can not say from tomorrow I have democracy and expect it will work. What we see today in Russia is not the worst option. If you do not remember in 90s Russia was in a path to a falling state and political olimp was attacked from ultra nationalistic parties from one side and communists from another. Do you think it would be better if they lead

                  P.S.
I want to warn some American folks who speaks with Russians left before 1990. Many of those have very bad attitude to Russia since they were basically "refugee" immigrants. They look Putin and see only KGB so they might have some bias in judgment.

                  Sorry for offtopic.
