Bob Mororaity(sp?) has publicly said that he expects President Bush to declare "martial law" in about three weeks.

Why? To completely trash the credit markets and ruin the economy?

i've been to countries that have martial law 24/7: it's economically crippling.

No, much more likely is a little economic stimulus that reeks of cordite and fetid flesh in its aftermath...

No, according to Mr. Moriarty, it's to declare martial law because of the financial system failure, then "to become dictator" of the United States.
If you agree with Bob, I expect his reasoning is under the guise of "financial crisis", G.W. Bush will postpone elections because of the "crisis".

What good does this do for anyone? Assert power over a crumbling economy?

Sounds to me like Mr. Moriarty doesn't have a good grip on reality.

However, if it is in fact I who doesn't have a good grip on reality, then in any case I and a couple million of my friends will set about defending "the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic."

The reason I use that particular BMW in this example is that for the first time in the history of this particular model, we'll see strong depreciation as soon as the auto is driven off the lot. These cars have hand built engines and are produced in very limited quantities. The world wide demand for 80k cars is evaporating and leases have already evaporated.

I do not believe that the Fed can jump start the world's economy so we'll have a bad recession either way with very turbulent bouts of severe inflation in the commodities markets. Afterall, everyone's gotta eat and have somewhere to sleep.

There is plenty of housing so rents will remain depressed. The consumer has been neutered so we'll see vacant commercial strips. Everyone has already replaced the appliances and floors so durable goods factories will remain idle. Bernacke will be getting one of three checks for 700+ billion so food and energy will go through the roof. Reminds me of my childhood.

Hopefully Hollywood can bring on some great cinema such as Star Wars and The Deer Hunter! Hopefully the hip-hop scene will die where it began!
Hopefully the USA will embrace President Carter's insights into energy this time instead of dissing him.
The low end BMW's are experiencing previously unseen value drops as the poseur-neuvo riche types who stretched to get into a new low end BMW can no longer lease them and the number of people looking for a used one has dropped. That nice Honda suddenly seems more prudent. I check resale values out of curiosity and mine is worth less than I would have predicted based on prior experience.
