Hurricane Ike. Most of the major U.S. refineries are located along the Gulf of Mexico Coast in Texas and Louisiana. I read an article that said the 2 major pipelines that serve the southeastern section of the U.S. (Colonial and Plantation are the names, I believe), are directly connected to the Gulf Refineries and experienced shortages due to shutdown of Gulf Coast refineries during Ike and also there was also some damage to Colonial Pipeline due to Hurricane Ike.
We don't have a shortage of gas here in Houston, ground zero for Hurricane Ike, because we get most of our gas via trucks.
I've also read there is not a shortage in the northeast, their pipelines are in good shape and connected to terminal points not impacted by Ike.

I got a feeling that "Peek oil" is apon you, very soon its going to be Gas lines!

(It's "peak oil") We had two hurricanes within a few weeks hit where we have a lot of refineries and oil pipelines. We also have stupid environmental laws here that require us to use numerous "boutique" blends of gasoline so that gas can't be transfered from one region to another to handle the demand w/o EPA approval, which was slow in coming. When you run at near capacity to begin with, even a small interruption matters.
Peak oil/etc is coming, but it is not the problem right now. A nasty recession combined with Americans economizing and using less already (15mpg SUVs and pickups sit unsold on lots while buyers opt for 25mpg plus cars) will blunt demand for a while.
I keep 100 gal stored so this hasn't affected me but there are lines at stations who do have gas in the affected region. Most the last several days have had none but it is expected to improve soon.Comment
