"Quit Doling Out That Bad-Economy Line" WASHINGTON POST

I keep reading the "it's just a mental depression" articles in the Post and being surprised by their nerve to publish reader comments. Nine out of ten bash the author and the Post. Each vituperative set is more intense. Is any editor reading any of it?

'I spent 40 years in the title insurance industry. I saw many, many ups and downs over those years and fortunately, survived every layoff during that time... But there is no more survival in this industry since the off shoring of jobs became a reality. Since I retired last December, I have seen so many of my co-workers, some with even more years in than myself, put on the street with no hope of ever re-entering the field because their jobs have been shipped to India and the Philippines. In all of those years, I never saw the housing and "lending markets collapse completely.... until now. I have seen the value of my own home drop by half... friends and neighbors being forced out of their homes because their investor/owners/landlords were upside down and just walked away."

"Where do YOU live? How many friends do YOU have working two jobs? What percentage of your income goes to healthcare? What percentage of your healthcare costs are for insurance? How much milk does your family need per week?"

"I am very serious when I say- the GOP has fully embraced the Nazi propaganda tactics of Goebbels."

    It goes on forever.

      The Post?

In mid-August, D.C.'s Rent Administrator, a woman doing the big job of overseeing rent control, was dismissed. No one knows why, although there are rumors.

To the best of my knowledge, the Post has still not reported the dismissal. Not a word that I can find.

I don't care what side you're on re rent control--this is a big story.

Imagine how quickly house price inflation picks up if rent controls are abolished, esp in DC, LA, NYC, SF, etc.

          JT,

Sorry, but I can't agree with this statement.

If it were 1999, you might have been right.

But even with rent control, people were buying multi-units far and above even market rent prices in the past several years.

Abolishing rent control just benefits the long term owners of property.

The ones who bought short term are still very much in the red.

And anyone buying a multi with many tenants under rent control - gets what they deserve because it was very clear up front what they were getting.
