  • the return of the cola

inflationary expectations were embedded in labor contracts in the 1970's via cola's - cost of living allowances. i heard a report on boeing on the radio this morning mention a cost of living clause in the proposed boeing contract. i hadn't heard that phrase for decades. the offer, in total, is [averaging] almost 7% per year for 3 years plus up to a 9% one time bonus. well anchored?

re: Boeing Machinists to Vote on Deal That May End Strike (was: the return of the cola)

    Bloomberg - 10/28/08

The agreement gives workers a 15 percent raise over four years, up from the 11 percent increase offered in the original three-year proposal that was rejected by 80 percent of voting members on Sept. 3, according to a union summary. It also freezes health-care costs to employees at the 2005 level, rather than asking them to shoulder more of the expense. It also would give them bonuses totaling at least $8,000 in the first three years.

Changes were also made to the three key areas of outsourcing the union had identified, including parts-delivery by suppliers within factories, job security for maintenance workers and the ability to bid for more projects in the future.

The union said its leaders unanimously endorse the plan. The two sides began the most recent negotiations on Oct. 23 with a federal mediator in Washington, D.C., after a two-day round collapsed a week earlier.

``This is an outstanding offer that rewards employees for their contributions to our success while preserving our ability to compete,'' Scott Carson, the top executive for Boeing's commercial-airplanes division, said in a statement.

But then Boeing is now an armaments company [which always do well in an inflationary war cycle] with a commercial airliner riveting operation stuck on...

Holy crap. I don't know what's more shocking: that they sold 40,000 trucks in Q307, or that they had 115 orders this past quarter.
