A Treasury insider said: ‘This plan is financial insanity and would seriously threaten the country’s long-term future.
‘It is so complicated, basically all smoke and mirrors, that almost no one really understands it. But Mr Brown is adamant this is what he wants. He thinks it’s the big bang the Government needs to relaunch.
‘Mr Darling and the Treasury loathe it. Plans are changing almost by the hour.

Hey, FRED, you should blend this thread into the other one Mega started yesterday or so about Darling's comments.
Why didn't you do that, Mega?
It seems to me that Darling was attempting to be a "truth teller," and that those who even attempt the truth with regard to all the bullshit that exists in politics are no more popular in the UK than they would be here, at least among peer party politicians.
I don't know how the US public would react to anything resembling the truth of how fucked up this country is: probably a lot of crying, teeth grinding, and rushes out to the mall to see if buying stuff would assuage the incipient discomfort of dealing with truth.Jim 69 y/o

So you think the crux of Darling's comments have to do with finishing Brown's tenure as PM as opposed to Darling apparently having some concern for preparing the British for tougher times ahead?
I doubt that this flap will have any direct effect on the Pound come Monday as you suggested. From what I read in the British papers online, Darling's sentiments of bad shit happening in the economy are not new news, rather just the fact that a politician might broach a hard truth in public or in a newspaper interview is THE news.
Edit: Perhaps my connection was poor, but it seemed to me the song you put up was a waste of time regarding anything to do with this issue.Jim 69 y/o

Re: Red Alert Update (must Read)
Here's a bit to support Darling's perspectives. http://www.bcaresearch.com/
The U.K. Economy: Look Out Below!
09:20:00, August 29, 2008
The fallout in the U.K. housing market is gaining momentum and will deliver dramatic knock-on effects for the aggregate economy. The BoE will be forced to respond aggressively.
Our U.K. housing model has been predicting double-digit price declines for some time. Alarmingly, the housing market appears to be slipping even faster than the model predicted. Yesterday's release showed that nationwide house prices plunged in August to -10.5% YoY (from -8.1% in July). Still, U.K. housing remains extremely overvalued and none of the leading real estate indicators suggest that the market is likely to find support in the coming months. In turn, the negative wealth effects will continue to mount, keeping the consumer depressed and hesitant to spend. The poor consumer outlook is highlighted by the dismal CBI retail survey for September. The financial sector will also remain under pressure as banks face a second bust in the commercial real estate market. Bottom line: The BoE will need to respond by aggressively lowering interest rates (beginning before yearend) in order to limit the fallout in the overall economy. Stay bearish the pound and overweight gilts within a global hedged fixed income portfolio.Last edited by Jim Nickerson; August 31, 2008, 12:27 AM.Jim 69 y/o

Eventually the British public, including you, will be able to pass judgement at the polls...unless you find an American wife and bail out of there before the next election of course

Then again, maybe married men don't actually live longer. Maybe it just feels like it...Marriage 'makes you live longer'
Married couples are more likely to live to an old age than their divorced, widowed or un-married counterparts, a new US study claims.
Research published today in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health shows that people that never marry are almost two-thirds more likely to suffer from premature death, with single men more adversely affected than women...
...US residents that had not married during the eight-year period were 58 per cent more likely to have died, whereas the increased risk of death for widowers and divorcees was revealed to be 40 per cent and 27 per cent respectively...
