Norway: Russia to cut all military ties with NATO
By BJOERN H. AMLAND, Associated Press Writer Wed Aug 20, 6:10 PM ET

OSLO, Norway - Russia has informed Norway that it plans to suspend all military ties with NATO, Norway's Defense Ministry said Wednesday, a day after the military alliance urged Moscow to withdraw its forces from Georgia.

Eide told The Associated Press that the Russian official notified Norway it will receive a written note about this soon. He said Norwegian diplomats in Moscow would meet Russian officials on Thursday morning to clarify the implications of the freeze.

"It is our understanding that other NATO countries will receive similar notes," Eide said. The ministry said the Russian official is known to the embassy, but Norway declined to provide a name or any further identifying information.

Europe gets it NG mainly from Russia and Algeria.

Please note recent events in Algeria.

Then note Gazprom activities in Libya.

NATO is running out of North Africa...

Oil's going below $100 don'tcha know? And then it's going below $80. And once it does that it could go to $30. I heard it on TV. Has to be right.

The Australian analyst, David Bensimon called a midsummer to late summer correction in oil down to $80, when this was a very lonely analyst call indeed - way back in Jan-March of this year, and his work and track record seem very robust. But it appears he may have stumbled on the "political factor", which introduces potentially massive wild-cards. But the "political factor" can work two ways! However I would not feel 100% confidence to bet against Bensimon's $80 short term call (next six months to one year). But WTFDIK.

        [ Extract ]

Iran's oil chief Muhammad Ali Khatibi says the global oil market is now oversupplied by roughly one-million barrels per day, but expects winter demand in the fourth quarter, to soak up the excess supply. US President George Bush deflated a $15 per barrel, Iranian "war premium" in the oil market, on July 16th, when he sent a special envoy to Geneva to speak with Tehran's nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, marking a major shift in US negotiating policy with the "Axis of Evil."

The direction of gold prices and inflation expectations also hinge on the direction of world oil prices. It's doubtful that the ECB hawks and the Group-of-Six central banks would have been so successful in knocking gold and oil prices lower without the help of Saudi king Abdullah, the central banker of oil. Iran and Venezuela would like to see the Saudis cut their oil output at the upcoming OPEC meeting on Sept 9th to stabilize the oil market, and prevent prices from moving lower.

However, the Saudi kingdom might be looking at the US political calendar, and would feel more comfortable with a John McCain presidency, thus Riyadh might be inclined to leave its oil output unchanged awhile longer. Already, the 25% drop in crude oil prices from five-weeks ago is paying dividends for Riyadh. In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the US presidential race, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July, and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

For investment purposes, I hope not.;) As a consumer, I guess I hope it is. Had the heating oil tank refilled recently... bit of a shock. Heard yesterday that natural gas prices are going up 20-30% this fall. Don't know if that's just local or global.
