  • Is it the 3rd inning yet?

    In March, I noted:

Timing is off. With the liquidation of a top investment bank (BSC), we are now past the 1st inning.

When we see a top 20 depository bank go into liquidation, then we'll be in the 3rd inning.
    Now MSM is saying:

The worst of the global financial crisis is yet to come and a large U.S. bank will fail in the next few months as the world's biggest economy hits further troubles, former IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff said on Tuesday.
Since then, I've revised to say that the depository bank failure will mark the 4th inning.

We at iTulip have often turned to innings, the time intervals of a baseball game, to stake out how far the decline has gone and, more importantly, how far it has to go. That this frequently invoked metaphor should appear in numerous threads is no surprise. We are, after all, convinced of the iTulip thesis, but know that time is all in the actions that we take in protecting and, hopefully, profiting from our investments. We take comfort in viewing the uncertainties that lie in the abyss through the structure of a familiar and pleasant pastime. Below is yet another pronouncement of our location on the Great Timeline of Economic Collapse (3rd inning).

financial crisis: bottom of the 7th
economic crisis: finishing the top of the 2nd
funding/bond and dollar crisis: the band is warming up for the national anthem.

        JK,

No complaints about the general inning, but I will note that there is a strong possibility that the funding bond/dollar crisis will be a rain shortened game...

Slightly off topic, but I don't think the baseball analogy is the best one for charting this financial crisis. I propose we start using a Lord of the Rings analogy. So, where are Frodo and company at this point? Meeting up with Strider at The Prancing Pony? Resting up in Rivendell? About to enter the Mines of Moria? I won't go any further because I don't think we're past The Fellowship yet.

And if the Doomers are right and we go Mad Max, that will mean Sauron won.

            Shake,

I'm not sure Lord of the Rings is a good analogy. After all, Frodo was trying to destroy the gold(en ring).

Maybe a better example is the Rheingold's Curse - the Icelandic Edda liberally stolen from for Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung operas.

In this case, the Rheingold is leverage
