    Spartacus -

I'm fully in agreement that Saakashvili has proceeded with apparent extreme stupidity here and also that the assault was indiscriminate, but there are some other objections too. Do you see them like I do? From the linked article:

“What happened on the night of Aug. 7 is beyond comprehension. The Georgian military attacked the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali with multiple rocket launchers designed to devastate large areas. Russia had to respond. To accuse it of aggression against ‘small, defenseless Georgia’ is not just hypocritical but shows a lack of humanity. . . . The Georgian leadership could do this only with the perceived support and encouragement of a much more powerful force.” 4

This is remarkable. Russia is the worlds most ruthless proponent of squashing separatist movements with "finality" - in Chechnya. Finally in frustration at their lack of progress in squelching the Chechen separatists, they literally flattened parts of the city. Gorbachev is wrapping himself up in the cloak of humanitarian indignation here? Do you perhaps accept the following news report from Grozny in Chechnya twelve years ago as factual, or merely another mischievous "news manipulation" of Russia's "humanitarian intervention" in Grozny?

Gorbachev has an exceedingly short memory these days. Or is it merely selective memory at work here?

YELTSIN ORDERS BOMBING HALT ON REBEL CITY

    By ALESSANDRA STANLEY,
    Published: January 5, 1995

    EXCERPTS:

... As Russian soldiers fight their way into Grozny, air strikes also pose an increasing danger to Russian soldiers. In any event, the bombing has seemed only to harden the resolve of the Chechen defenders and strengthen support for the rebel leader, Dzhokhar M. Dudayev. ...

When Russian forces entered Chechnya on Dec. 11, the Clinton Administration described the action as an internal Russian affair. But after reports of bombings of civilian areas around Grozny increased, Washington followed the lead of France and Britain and began voicing concern about the lives of innocent people, as well as the war's political cost to Mr. Yeltsin and his Government.

Today France spoke out again, urging its Western European partners to hold Russia accountable for its actions at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, of which Russia is a member.

"We have a right to demand explanations at the O.S.C.E.," said the French Foreign Minister, Alain Juppe. "I have contacted our 14 partners of the European Union so that we turn to Russia and ask Russia to give an explanation."

Russian television news programs, particularly those of the independent channel NTV, have been showing graphic scenes of dead and maimed Chechen civilians and bodies of Russian soldiers piled up on the streets of Grozny.

The gruesome scenes on television have stirred outrage and widespread skepticism among Russians about Government reports playing down the number of casualties.

Valentin Kovalyov, who is no relation to Sergei Kovalyov and is the chairman of a separate human rights committee recently created by Mr. Yeltsin, was asked today about Russian losses at a news conference.

He said "20 units of armor" were lost on Tuesday. His vagueness prompted Vladimir V. Semago, his colleague in the Communist faction of the lower house of Parliament, to remark, "I am deeply impressed by the depth of cynicism."

On Tuesday about 100 civilians were reported killed during bombing raids over Shali, 15 miles southeast of Grozny. Today survivors recounted an attack on the town market and on the hospital, where two wounded Russian officers had been among the 50 patients.

"It was hell, like hell all around," said Lieut. Oleg Podnosov, 22, in an interview in Shali. Speaking of the Russian bombings, he said, "I never would have thought they could do that."

The Russian officer said he was shot in the stomach in a battle in Argun on New Year's Day and transferred to the hospital by Chechen fighters. He was the only hospital patient left today, the rest having been evacuated from Shali after Tuesday's raids.

Residents of Shali said that no Chechen fighters were based in the vicinity and that they saw no one fire back at the Russian planes. Witnesses said the town was attacked several times by air.

"First they fired at the market and the street," said Amanat Abu bakarova, 27, a pediatrician. "Then they came back and fired at the hospital. They flew low, shooting rockets right here," she said, pointing at the entrance to the gynecology ward.

The head doctor at the hospital, Zaur Mushuyev, asserted that Russian forces bombed the town "because all the wounded came here, now that the Grozny hospitals are not working."

Pu-tin is a Chess player in every sense of the word, Bush & co is not. I sense this was not a planned operation by the US, but Is-real?

Well at lest they didn't try to sink an American ship this time (so far).

I would think if they wanted a war to distract the general public they would do a better job of it. I think for the average Joe this is pretty low on the radar. Besides I think people are so uninformed and apathetic that "wagging the dog" is not necessary.

I do think it is funny that on CNN, a woman in Georgia (USA) was wondering when the Russian tanks would appear.

Perhaps that was the thinking - that if Russia attacked a Southern state, that the South would Rise Again!
