never ceases to amaze me... why oh why does anyone think the price of anything goes straight up or down forever? the dollar's been tanking since 2001 from 111 to 71... 36%... with tons of rallies. eight years from now when the dollar rallies off 40 we'll hear... oh, look! the dollar is getting stronger!

the dollar is f*ucked because the usa is f*cked because of decades of shit leadership and worse strategy that's left us in debt and without means to earn the money to pay it off. you don't fix that in a week. rallies are ops to buy more pms.

Perhaps this is an opportunity here for veterans to speak to "newbies" (and I include myself) in the community.

I read today that the powerful dollar rally now is being fueled by massive dollar purchases by friendly central banks worldwide. Is this correct?

Also, for those who may be new to precious metals, and may be tempted to sell them at this time: Is this a time to sit tight, or sell, as many newbies may do?

Is this dollar rally going to be brief (up to six weeks?), or does it signal something significant and long-lasting (a new pro-USD attitude) from genuine markets (other than friendly central banks)?

In short, how should newbies react to dollar rallies?
And would someone like to explain just what the heck a dollar rally is, anyway?

Tree - Aren't you on EJ's admin / editorial team over there? If so, you've got a beeline to some intel that's better than anything posters here can contribute?

No, just a member of the community...

Sometimes I think the site needs to play a little catch-up and explain basic things for newcomers. Doing so, I think, will spread faster what "we" believe and think important to discuss. (And I think plenty of members beyond the admin/edit team are very capable of doing this.)

been watching since 2001. at each dollar rally ask yourself...
              • has the usa fiscal position improved?
              • entitlements liability covered?
              • wars over?
              • oil gushing out of the ground in oklahoma?
              • national saving rate reversed?
              • current account deficit reversed?
              • congress and the corrupt political system that brought us the housing bubble, mortgage crisis, and gse bailouts in violation of the constitution? all fixed up, are they?
              • corrupt fed that opened the discount window to wall street firms? reformed yet?
              • inflation tackled by brave fed with rate hikes in the face of credit crunch and debt deflation?

so now we're all supposed to be spooked by the rally in the bonar against the corrupt euro zone crap currency? who's got worse management, usa inc. or euro inc.? it's a tight match!!! they both suck so bad.

sit back, grab a beer, and watch the show. looking forward to this commentary that goes with this tidbit fred posted today...

                Re: The $ rockets?

Speaking as a 6 mo "newbie subscriber" who has been lurking here for about a year, purchased my first gold in Nov and my first silver yesterday; I want to second Tree's suggestion. I dipped into PMs with the goal to hedge against things turning really ugly rather than to make my fortune; so I'm ready to stick this out until I see some dramatic change in fundamentals. Nontheless, sage reminders are always very much appreciated!

Man, looking at that graph, I sure hope we don't have to wait until 2013 for gold to break $1100 or so?

                          Re: The $ rockets?

during the 1970's gold run from $32 to $800, gold spent over a year and half from '75 through most of '76, dropping from about $200 to $100. of course we all know how that movie came out, but imagine living through it. let's say gold spends the next year slowly dropping to $530. just think about it. how would you handle your pm positions?

you've got to thoroughly understand why you take your investment positions and what you're willing to go through with them. of course, you've also got to thoroughly understand why you abandon positions you've taken in the past. nobody knows the future.
