Sounds similar to what Ferdinand Lundberg wrote in "The Rich and the SuperRich." He told of a congressional rewrite of the taxcode that benefited only a certain Hollywood film producer, and only a certain project at that.

Most of the comments in these fora about the dastardness of US politics reminds me of the saying about weather, if I remember it correctly, "Everybody talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it."

        Yesterday, Charles MacKay wrote: Quote:

Don't vote and don't hold dollars and you won't be participating in this sick and rotten corruption!

        JN Emphasis.

I totally agree with MacKay's admonition about not voting, because by voting you participate in the farce into which the democratic government of the US has evolved. Right up until the last three years (I am a late and slow learner) I usually participated in the farce by voting. It is of no comfort to acknowledge that one's vote does not amount to jack-shit in this country. The younger one is, the harder it is or will be to come to that conclusion, because to reach that conclusions means there is no way out for the individual as far as participating in changes for the better. No one wishes to think things can't or won't change if we can just get the right dude elected. Once people become politicians, what happens to those who elected them moves way down on the list of concerns until at least the next election when lip-service to the electors will kick in again.

If one is given to attempting to live under some code of morality, I think MacKay is closest to correct. If you are a moral person, do not allow yourself to be sucked into the game of politics by participation in it.

Anyone doubting my wisdom in expressing this before arguing MacKay's or my opinion, just think back on all your votes and ask yourself where has it gotten our country?

Oh, and then there is Ted Stevens, the Republican Alaskan Senator since 1968. Did this guy just recently turn rotten, or did he finally do something so callous that even the officials could not overlook it, or have the enforcement agencies suddenly become more adept? Remember this guy is innocent until proven guilty, and if proven "not guilty," it is not exactly the same as "innocent." I suspect a lot of his colleagues envy him as he has "served" forty years without being indicted--a goal I bet they all shoot for.

Re Jim's rant I recall a "great" (in the sense of funny, disillusioning and illuminating) quote from the British Pm Harold Wilson:

"What's the point of having a constituency if you can't sell them out?"

          Kinda says it all.

your vote counts; you just can't elect representatives that are economically literate with voters that are economically ignorant.

I suspect you are a dreamer if you think a vote counts with regard to changing anything in a real sense. In my opinion, your thoughts after the semicolon do not translate into a vote amounting to anything.

I won't fault you with having hope, it's typical of the masses. Hopefully with time you'll overcome it.

I've concluded that my vote doesn't mean anything and have chosen not to engage in the corrupt and ineffective campaigning and political processes for over half of my eligble voting years. I also have hope and believe in a progressively advancing world civilization that's being forced into the long and ardorous process of coperating and coexisting. We can invoke change, it starts with the hearts and minds of individuals. Engaging in the ineffective and corrupt political process is analgous to pushing the responsibility onto someone else and then feeling good about yourself b/c you did your part when doing your part and making change is about the 24/7/365 way you make decisions and live your life.

Agreed, for the most part. I've only ever voted in state elections. At the county level and with ballot measures, the common man still has some access to political power. Some of the state-wide elections aren't completely out of our control yet either, but many are. Control meaning who can afford to run. Above a certain level, almost all candidates have to sell out in order to get elected and for re-election.

Seriously, what will ever make the system such that it is not mostly (being charitable on my part) under the control of those with the most money? I am not nearly imaginative enough to come up with any answer.
