  • Selling grillz to pay the bills

I believe EJ posted on the topic of who was buying and selling gold right now. I found this link on the front page of cnn.com around 1 PM central US time:

Thanks, Charlie, a gem. Put it in the Pax Americana-Late Stage time capsule!
    Almost worth de-constructing.

don't see a lot of harvard grads lined up to sell their teeth or buy lotto tickets.

if the usa doesn't focus its energy on edu, we are as screwed as can be. like the video itulip is playing.

not that it'd surprise me... given the pedigree of the folks itulip talks to. btw, i'd love to see a martin mayer update. he must have opinions on fannie and freddie, the idea of a derivatives exchange by the fed, etc.

Sadly, no, I am not Charlie. Just a huge fan.

My understanding is that both Charlie and Warren shun macroeconomic outlooks as impossible to predict with any certainty. Instead they focus only on individual businesses and buying them at a significant discount to its intrinsic value. At least that's the claim.

Although when calculating intrinsic value, future business outlooks are always taken into account. I don't see how a macro understanding could hurt. Charlie and Warren claim to have never bought or not bought a business based on the macro conditions though.

that may have been so when they started out but not anymore. the real charlie should read itulip... in the bubble boom/bust era, macro conditions are bubble conditions and these guys are experts.

how about changing your user name to CharlesTMungerFan so there's no confusion?

I don't think it is possible to change my name - although I suppose I could create a new account... I put in my profile information that I am not the actual Charles Munger, but I can see how confusion could be created given the high quality of people on iTulip.

I am curious about your other statement though - have you seen or heard anything that leads you to believe Charlie and Warren have started looking at macroeconomic outlooks when making business acquisition decisions? That would be a significant reversal of policy for them and I would be interested in reading more.
