  • if it were a baseball game...

I've been digesting itulip analysis for about the past 12 months and have to first say thank you for all the insights.

In a number of posts the progress of the "economic decline" has been referred to in terms of the innings in a baseball game. (I apoligize for not providing links however I'm sure a quick search will make the postings easy to find) The most recent reference I saw hinted that the U.S. would enter the "4th inning" after the failure of a major depository institution, a la IndyMac.

So, I thought it'd be fun to identify which events will signal the beginnings of each succesive inning. What do you all think?

Here's what I've got to start:

4th Inning: (top half) Bank failures begin (bottom half) Freddie Mac / Fannie Mae / FHA / State pension plans bailed out or infused with capital

5th Inning: As foregin governments begin accepting the financial reality of the U.S. inflating its way out of debt, they'll demand payment. In response the ffice:smarttags" />U.S. government will begin nationalizing utility companies, banks and roadway systems in order to transfer ownership in exchange for write-downs on U.S. government debt.

7th Inning: Because of Fannie and Freddie bailout and foreclosures, U.S. government now has substantial residential real estate land holdings (in effect, circumventing eminent domain) in order to avoid having NIMBY stop the construction of public housing, factories and power plants.

    8th Inning: ???
    9th Inning: ???
    Extra Innings???

I'm in a learning mode and don't completely understand all the complex nuances, looking forward to commentary...

Welcome and thanks for the post.

Indeed the timing of the innings and all the plays in each are hard to forecast. We're developing such a thing, and to give you an idea of the time scale and range of plays, consider two:

2010: Emergency Energy Relief Act provides government subsidies to make natural gas and heating oil affordable to low income households and provide gasoline coupons that can like food stamps at grocery stores be redeemed at gas stations.

2013: Emergency Energy Relief Act amended to permit eminent domain laws to be used to construct high speed ground transport* on some privately owned property.

    * A train that travels on rails at a few hundred miles per hour, exposed to the risk of collision with objects on the ground, will not do at all in the new era of high speed ground transport. Think of a tube, not unlike the one you may have traveled in London, but also like that used to send mail around a facility in a container. Now imagine it moving at Mach 1.2. Get it?

Want a really far reaching investment tip? Who can dig tunnels really, really fast? We're going into tubes that go underground where necessary for safety and property rights reasons.

My guess is that by the end of the 9th inning 1 ounce of gold will buy you the Dow Jones and people will pay you to live in a house so that I don't get all broken up.

Actually, the baseball analogy I would use is the All Star starting pitcher (Greenspam) has great numbers early in the season, but in this game got into trouble in the first inning.

He left complaining about his exhaustion, and was replaced by a 1st round draft pick who was burning up the AA circuit (Bernanke).

Unfortunately the other team has now pushed 4 runs through, the bases are loaded, 1 out, and its the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Now comes the cleanup hitter for the other team: Bank Panic (sponsored by major depository bank failure).

He swings at a fastball that drifted over the plate...

To C1UE, with my sincere respect:

All Star starting pitcher Greenspan had great numbers early in the season with his spitter, but in this game got into trouble early.

He left complaining about exhaustion, and was replaced by Bernanke, a 1st round draft pick who was burning up A-Ball.

The other team has now pushed 4 runs through, the bases are loaded, 1 out, and its the bottom of the 3rd.

Their cleanup hitter, Bank Panic, is at the plate, with a personal history of knocking them out of the park.

He swings at Bernanke’s first pitch, a fastball that sails over the heart of the plate, right in BP’s wheelhouse...

It’s hit high, it’s hit deep, IT’S OUT OF HERE!

                    Thanks, C1UE, for the opportunity!

maybe its better stated as a slow pitch softball game and all the fielders are huddled around the keg when the pitcher delivers up a fat one to "Big Cat"....
