  • March driving down for 1st time since 1979: government

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sign that Americans are curbing their driving in the face of record-high gasoline prices, data released on Friday showed highway miles driven in March fell 4.3 percent from a year earlier, the first March decline since the last major oil shock in the late 1970s.
Ok people, this is another major milestone!! The contraction is now on Main Street!!! Watch your commodities, they may rise a little more as some seek shelter from defaulting paper, but be careful, wouldn't want to get caught under that stream roller!!

Just going by the traffic on highway 101 yesterday, Californians have not cut back on Memorial Day Weekend automobile travel. And if they gas up in Willits, the gateway to Redwood Country, they're going to pay between $4.07 and 4.17 for regular and 5.00+ for diesel.

This will be an interesting data point to try an figure out how much of the driving that is done in the US is necessary.
