Your state in general is in a catastrophic financial mess due not to aids of course, but due to "left wing" socialist attitudes. Maybe those "right wingers" could teach you guys a few things about fiscal responsibility and free markets and liberty and how it can actually help more people in the long run escape poverty and financial ruin than giveaway programs.

I despise both parties equally, they each want to rob and steal my liberty and treasure, just in different ways.
Thanks for agreeing about the inappropriateness of his comment (at least someone agrees with me on something, if only one point).

Some of California's troubles do come from overspending and its many liberal practices, but I don't think that is the only cause of financial troubles. I think to state it that way would be an oversimplification. I think more can be blamed on the overheated, overpriced housing market and how fast it has fallen. While SF may be liberal (and some of us really enjoy the freedom it offers), much of the state is essentially conservative (the Central Valley, Orange Country, etc.) Things just seem to happen here first (meltdown), so it may offer a window into the future for other states regardless of whether they are liberal, conservative or something in between.

Actually, as another person living in SF, I can explain the $4 gas very simply: tourists.

Between the not SF-Bay Area tourists and the international tourists, there is a huge population of stupids to prey upon. Think of SF as a wierd liberal kind of Disneyland.

Why not jack up the price of gas? That goes for restaurants and shops as well.

Plus the city also taxes more heavily than the average suburb - although obviously not all.

Then there's the real estate: RE in SF is a beautiful example of NIMBY in action.

Between Proposition 13, rabid local zoning councils, rent control, and of course my favorite - the $88 2 bedroom low income condos in the Western Addition and/or Tenderloin and/or Potrero, turnover is simply very low.

So prices are somewhat stickier as the only people buying houses are either those rich, those really wanting to become rich via joining the RE Ponzi rentier scheme (late), or those too stupid to become poor enough for the subsidized stuff.

Nothing to see here, move along.

well the average in Willits and Ukiah is just about $3.85 and rising radidly; we're not far behind. It's not tourist season up here yet.

It's kind of like an assurance this place has not yet been vaccinated as "fully pasteurized" by the food and drug administration. You know, with one of those "inspected for politically unsavory content and passed" stamps on the shrink wrapped label?

At any rate your collection of indignant remarks above definitely appear to be a perfect distillation of everything one would hear from an indignant San Franciscan. I think we can definitely rate the tone of response as "100% USDA San Francisco Morally Scandalized" (or is it "Morally Sanitized").

BTW - "callus" is spelt "callous". It is the noun designating an area of thickened skin developed by land animals to ward off injury from repeated abrasions.

And other point: the fact that iTulip does not censor such remarks is at least arguably a good thing. In my view, the fact such remarks are not "over-zealously" censored as you seem to wish and expect (politically correct police on the prowl are not doing their sanitizing duty?) is precisely because it encourages a wide and eclectic range of viewpoints - an approach I find distinctly refreshing.

Sorry to contribute what you'll likely regard as highly unwelcome "two cents" here, but the shrillness with which your high moral tone is expressed seemed to be begging for someone to offer you a rejoinder. Just because it's your home town does not mean you need to have a hissy fit if someone throws eggs at the place. Whatever happened to your famous San Francisco admiration for diversity of opinions here?

I recently joined this board to learn and discuss economics. If I wanted to read right-wing political commentary about my home city, I would engage one of the many neo-nazi boards readily available on the Internet. Your comments regarding people with aids, etc., are uncalled for, are callus and insensitive. Most of these types of comments have already been said (about 20 years ago), and usually by closeted types who have issues. I am surprised the administrator on this board didn't just delete your post.

Unlike you, who lived 30 miles from SF in your past, I actually live in the City limits and my property taxes, not gasoline taxes, pay for the City services you mention. I cannot fathom why you would have any interest in our City's budget since you are not part of it and pay nothing towards it.

Our high gasoline prices are very simple to understand. We have very little available land in our City. Land, being expensive, is not often used to build gas stations. As a result, there is little competition for the few that are here and they usually cater to commuters leaving the City (like those who live 30 miles away and can't afford to live here).

I use to enjoy reading many of your posts when they were focused on economics, not politics, but will now view them in a different light. Please accept my thanks for spoiling this board for me.

Thanks Rick, and I don't necessarily disagree about what will happen economically in CA. S. Cal I think may get it worse, especially as h2o gets more expensive and scare down there. It seems logical that as CA goes, it won't be long before other states follow; we're all just too interdependent. I have been following advice on this board and hope to be prepared (as much as one can be, anyway).

Sorry to jump on you so hard earlier. I am sometimes way too passionate about my believes. By the way, I think Florida is a great place to live, too.

The gas stations around me start at $4.29 and go up to $4.49 for regular unleaded - in the West SF the prices are closer to what you see.

The actual distance apart is 2 miles.

So don't tell me there is not a tourist impact.

I was down there two weekends ago, but strategically didn't have to fill up. To those prices I say, "Holy Shit!!!"

U must not have ever lived in Florida!!! lol

Hey here is my take on things. As a society we all work together to survive - hey how many people work to bring my family water and electricity? I'm not sure but without them my wife and kids are screwed, becouse I don't have a clue. I can't grow the food my wife and kids eat I just don't know how. I need the people that do know how to PLEASE keep doing what they know how to do. If my kids or wife get sick all I know how to do is take them to the doctor - "oh please Doctor make them well I love them so much" - I can't do that as I don't know how to make them better - so we all work together to live and survive.

Everyday I look at what I do at work to see if it is something of value to the group (society) if its not i know that in the long run I'm done, over and out, finished. Ouch

Now my only probem with California and San Fran is that the promotion from the politicians is for NO production and no responsibility. If U reward no production U get no production - now that is just based on what i have seen - and that is why our current goverment will not work, they all (both sides) promise things that we can not produce for them (40 B for this 400 B for that) just to get in office. How could it have come to this?

                          Just my ramblings, Your friend

PS I'm a cryer ( A big cryer I'm 6 6 and 235 but still a cryer, kind of old 53) if i see a kid with aids i cry, can't help it, - WHY THEM? I love people but they have to be part of the group to survive - just seems like its how things are. Any thoughts?

Haven't ever lived there, but I am tempted every time I visit a client I have in Tampa. Beautiful place with no state income tax is very tempting.

Yes, the politicians in SF are really out there. Especially when it comes to the homeless. Most of it is for theatrics for the news, though, since the City has become too expensive for most of the working poor to live in. Only the totally dependent that pass down their public housing units from generation to generation seem to stick around since the tab is picked up for them by the City. Our mayor wants to run for governor after the "terminator," so a lot of what he is doing now is in support of that goal.

Most of the City's money comes from tourism I suspect (as my fellow SF resident mentioned earlier I think), so they always seem to have plenty of it to give away. We really have become that adult Disneyland he talked about. Fun place to live, but frustrating at times.

I forgot to say "thank you" for your kind words. I understand now that I may have misunderstood your original post. I use to work in a health care environment (on the finance side) and regularly volunteered to help with the kids in the "aids" unit. We lost several that I grew quite close to, hence my passionate response to perceived comments about these victims. After that experience, I decided to stick with corporate finance (audit) where I can direct my passion to catching fraud (can be fun sometimes).

By the way, since when is 53 old?! I'm not far behind.
