I would like to invite c1ue to the campus of my alma mater the University of Georgia on a spring afternoon like today and see how long he can last looking at all the beautiful coeds walking by before his jaw hits the ground. Maybe that's what he means by the "teeth thing".

As another UGA grad, I can back this opinion up as well. And I can't tell you how many people from outside the south have told me how beautiful southern women are compared to where they are from. The truth is, there are fat and ugly people everywhere. The small differences from region to region are probably insignificant. And what difference does it make anyway?

I don't know, your proverbial tourist might be in for a shock.

Quite honestly, the majority of American women are ugly.

Even with the surgeries and what not, they just collectively don't have any idea on style.

Being fat doesn't help.

Americans just don't seem to understand that eating tons of food and exercising don't cancel out - unless you're a marathon runner.

Of course you know what this means - the ones who are hot have such seriously bad attitudes.

In the South this seems much less of an issue, but then again there's the whole teeth thing (kind of British). And the post-35 weight thing (kind of German).

Hell maybe its the same all over, although I must say Russia is nice.

I know it sometimes seems as if everyone visiting this site is male, but that's not the case.

I'm for defending everyone's right to free speech, and I'm certainly not calling for censorship here, but this exchange about American women and whores is, I think, below iTulip standards.

I'm all for free speech here also. Netiquette in the form of overly acute rules about what does or does not constitute "politically or socially accepted comments" displays what appears to be an appealing advantage - the suppression of insensitive remarks.

Yet it also risks entering into a "runaway netiqette" effect, once you legitimize people's rights to "edit" each other. It's risks then outweigh it's benefits as people may be tempted into exercising continual increments of this privilege until it has crept in further than intended originally. I fully and emphatically uphold the ban on any racial slurs, or gender slurs. I mean that sincerely. However these kneejerk reactions here (e.g.: "I'll be damned if I'm gonna let you call my tribe unattractive"!) are calling out for a defence of the post that is drawing so much flak.

I find nothing overtly improper, or indeed less than factual about it at all. And let's not kid ourselves, if a thing is true that's the final litmus test of what's acceptable in a community which claims to be pursuing truth. Americans are some of the most obese people in the world and this is ascertained by the AMA, and a whole host of other sources. Europeans and visitors from the world over remark on it. The charts I posted evidence it, and you can shake the bushes and find a ton of other documentation for it.

This country used to full of energetic and slim people, but there are a good deal more slothful and obese ones now than in other parts of the world. You'l have a tough slog disproving the medical consensus does not uphold this, and also that it does not uphold that the highest rates of obesity are concetrated in the southeast and south generally. Anyone who takes this as a personal offence is barking without a plausible excuse. People just don't want their feelings to be bruised. Tough. Suck it up, as they say - if the AMA upholds it you'll have to do a bit of spadework to overturn the claim.

And as to imputing misognynist or gender offensive comments here, I see none. All I read is an observation that a larger number of Americans, hence also American women, are overweight, and as a result of this, a higher incidence than normal of women that are slender (percieved by social norms as more attractive), bear certain "latter day American" traits, which we've actually all remarked on previously - traits which are typical of a lot of Americans today. That is, many Americans are excessively materialistic and in this subset of women, the most attractive ones require their suitors be the best looking male available, to be of impeccable upwardly mobile credentials, and with a bank account to prove it.

What C1ue is pointing out is in fact entirely true. If you go to former Soviet Union countries, or to a great many countries worldwide, you find a higher incidence of women who are a lot less picky as to the "suitability" of a man, as they tend to be looking for sound character first. As a direct a consequence they also tend to being more loyal and supportive of their eventual mate than American women. We do acknowledge that the divorce rate in the US is one of the highest in the world, and that is not a casual statistic to the above observations?

And as to Mega's post regarding American whore tourism, I think whatever flak he gets for that comment is something entirely up to him to defend, as it's a little on the far side of risque', and not redeemed by much of a genuinely humorous content either. Of course in other communities, a woman objecting might merely offer some devastatingly acid observation in return as to the merits of men, and the entire exchange would gain as it would be a robust example of feisty discourse all around. Apparently we are now striving for something much blander here, as we are anxiously searching for a "more muted" set of parameters of debate.

Perhaps if our readers immersed themselves for an afternoon reading a little Jonathan Swift, his acerbic comments might recommend a little more pizzazz than the "safe parameters for debate" you all seem to be pining for?

Ah, c'mon Tree. I am the antithesis of a woman hater. I'd vote for a woman president, (must confess am not wild about Hillary though). I've worked for a woman boss several times in my life and gotten along famously. I can take orders from a woman superior better than many men, because I have zero hangups about it. You don't know who or what I am - how could you possibly know if I'm a woman hater? Truth be told, I often think women are the better half of the species. Your objection is based on nothing more than a need to react to what I observed.

Actually, you are quite right about the scrap metal dealers/recyclers. I went to the local auto salvage yard, looking for an auto part. The fellow that works there said that in years past, they couldn't give tin away and the same could be said about old car batteries. Now everybody wants them, and are willing to pay.
