Bump...for black comedy reasons, given what's been in the news.

Not necessarily, there are quite a few billionaires and sub billionaires in the USA and they are a minority. ;) I am not saying I agree with it but never underestimate social revolutions.

It wouldn't surprise me to see people spontaneously acting out, sort of an American road rage writ large. Some local, minor event, like the Rodney King beating but say in housing foreclosures, ignites people to trash their local financial district. That would result in police, the Army and a Presidential walk through, with a committee appointed to come up with answers. Right. Containment would be the exercise.

Without leadership, the American consumer, regardless how of pissed off he is, can't get anywhere, and the State will respond to leadership threats decisively. When American citizens became American consumers, the jig was up. Apparently Empire will do that to the bulk populi.

Fascism is a different kettle of eels altogether. Where's the need? While we're clearly in a fiscal crisis, a political crisis is nowhere to be seen. There's been some analysis that we live in a soft totalitarian state. Eat your potato chips, watch TV and go to your lousy job and everything's copasetic. The key ingredients to defining a fascist state in a meaningful way are- a failed democracy (we've accomplished that) and a marriage of the military in the broad, Eisenhower-warning sense, to the large corporations. (Ditto) Mimicking history isn't necessary.

My best guess would be an English-like descent into non-hegemony. England did not go peacefully into whatever Great Power night its in. They were called the first and second world wars but there was no real domestic uprising over its demise. Maybe the sacrifice of those generations took the edge off.

That would be the greater danger here. Pushing the Red Button rather than accepting our fate. If we're around long enough we'll know.

We haven't really had a Rodney King event in quite some time.

I find it amusing that some Americans are just now waking up to the fact that they aren't.
that's why there are other PMs that we should all own...brass and lead.

The ceremony of innocence is dead
              The best lack all conviction
While the worst are full of passionate intensity…

Slouches towards bethelehem to be born

The source is Wayne Madsen who is runs a Washington DC rumor website. If this is unfounded bunk; I'm trying to figure out what his agenda is.

The point that stuck me odd in the article is why would the US unilaterally cancel its debt when it can just inflate the debt away? The article also states "if the United States defaults", however, the US will never default; the debts will get paid with increasingly worthless dollars (as noted by iTulip). I suppose we could have a situation where there is not a default in fact, but a default in good faith if we hyper-inflate our way out over months, rather than decades.
Here is what Democratic Underground website has to say:

"Wayne Madsen is not considered an acceptable source for use on DU. Please do not use or cite again.
