Chrysler to Shut Entire Company for Two Weeks in July (Update1)

    By Mike Ramsey

March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Chrysler LLC, citing a need for more efficiency, said it will shut down the entire company for two weeks in July during the period when it usually closes its assembly plants.

Salaried employees at the third-largest U.S. automaker will be asked to take vacation time during the weeks beginning July 7 and July 14, Chief Executive Officer Robert Nardelli said in an e-mail to employees today.

``In order to create better alignment and efficiency across organizational lines and boost productivity, Chrysler will use corporate-wide vacation shutdown'' for those weeks, Nardelli said in the e-mail. Some jobs may need to be staffed during the closure, he said.

Manufacturing shutdowns in July are traditional for Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler and the two largest U.S. automakers, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co.

So this is the way one of America's big three auto makers will die, with a vacation shut down?

Naa. First we need to have Federal Bailout of Chrylser v.2.

After all, it's no fun unless the taxpayer gets to lose lots of money along the way. Right?

Maybe they are just following the European model of efficiency with long, languid summer vacations. ;)

In the 1930's the Ford motor company built a car entirely out of soybean plastics, (not sure about the engine block though) except for the tubular frame. It even ran on ethanol! Now why can't we get that kind of ground-breaking innovation today?

It weights in at almost 1750 Kgs that's a Ton & 3 quaters......yet has a missable Turbo Diesel engines that are MILES behind BMW/VW/Honda...........They can't sell them, they are dumping them on the discount market......a £17670 Ford can be yous for £13,000 !

            Miker -

It's considered a puny sissy car in America for men drivers, (the ultimate American male's put-down of other male drivers  ) but I drive a Volkswagen Turbo-diesel, and I love it. Very well engineered little car.

I can cruise 625 miles on a single tank (about 13.5 gallons of diesel). I fuel it up once a month, and when I want to take a long trip to San Francisco or the Grand Canyon the fuel bill is tiny - it's really chump change as it gets 46 miles per gallon on the highway. I'm completely happy to let others drive the three and four liter engines.

This little 100 HP engine 1.9 liter turbo-diesel has a lot of pickup too - could cruise at 100 MP all day comfortably at 3000 RPM's consuming 46 MPG (if I was in Germany!) and still has plenty of power to speed up to 110-120 to pass another vehicle. It holds the road very well for such a light vehicle.

Unfortunately the stick in the mud, pedantic California Highway Patrol seems to insist that all drivers must remain at the 65 - 75 MPH speed limits, and they seem to have no sense of humor at all about someone test-driving a Volkswagen at 120 MPH. What a bunch of bores, eh?

I was on the phone with a family friend in California tonight (my time) and she told me that diesel is now over $4.00 a gallon where she is (north of LA). Isn't that higher than the gasoline price Lukester???

I'm going to butt in here as a diesel truck driver just told me this last night...

Not only is it roughly 50 cents higher per gallon, but the price has risen 2/1 in California vs gasoline over the last year. national gas/diesel info. here

Wow. So much for saving money with a diesel car. That price difference probably offsets most or all of the savings from higher fuel efficiency...

I will venture a guess that increased diesel auto use in Europe is limiting the refinery surplus available for export to the USA. Just a guess though.
