    Dear iTulip.com Members,

Casting producer for ABC television Jodi Friedman is looking for a registered member of our community or a visitor to our community for the TV reality show Wife Swap.

This promotion is a bit out of the ordinary for iTulip.com. Our advertising is usually confined to wealth management and financial planning sponsors and ads related to economics and investment, books on investing and trading, and so on. Our advertising policy states that we do not accept ads for products and services that are bad for our members' financial health, such as "suicide loans," no matter how lucrative these products are to sell. We turn them down all day long.

After reviewing our advertising policy, talking to Jodi, giving it some thought and talking it over with my wife and iTulip, Inc. co-founder, I decided that the show Wife Swap fits with iTulip.com's spirit of debunking popular albeit incorrect notions about society and of honest intellectual exploration. Also, creating an opportunity for our members to make $20,000 is positive, and of course iTulip, Inc will earn some revenue, always good for keeping the new features and services coming.

For those of you who have never watched the show, the premise of Wife Swap is to take two different families and have the mom's switch place to experience how another family lives for six days. Half of the week, mom lives the life of the family she is staying with. The other half, she introduces a "rule change" where she implements rules and activities that her family has. It's a positive experience for people to not only learn, but teach about other families and other ways of life.

Despite the connotations of the show's name, Wife Swap is anything but a low brow reality show. My wife and I have watched the show and have found it full of moving and revelatory moments. The show has received wide critical support. This recent New York Times review is typical:

Why didn't "Wife Swap" come along sooner? It's such a simple idea: two married women with children change places for 10 days. You can have princesses swap with paupers, carnivores with vegans, obsessives with slobs. The twisted interior logic of a family is forced into public transparency, a full-on (if rigged) audit — and that's fantasy for anyone who's ever thought her family was uniquely bonkers. The series is cheap to make, and rewarding: the families either decide they like the new woman better (which is intriguing but rare), or they want the old wife back, and there's a tearful reunion.

Like any good family show, "Wife Swap" is fundamentally conservative: nearly all the participants realize there's no place like home.

Tonight ABC congratulates itself on its elegantly ripped-off concept ("Wife Swap" first appeared in Britain, in 2003) with a highlight reel intended to demonstrate not just how entertaining the program is, but how morally elevating. "Wife Swap Saved My Marriage" suggests that the funny series is more than funny: it's social work, defending the sacrament of marriage one reality-show spectacle at a time.

    Or this one from PopMatters.com:

"Wife Swap is compelling as cultural commentary because it torpedoes the Stepford-esque, nuclear family ideals of functionality. Beyond that potentially positive social value, it provides gripping TV drama by opening a window onto the exquisite, unique wackiness of everyone's family life."

Jodi is looking to feature a family on the show who is non-mainstream, anti-consumerist and anti-materialist, to share their way of life and raise awareness on how people can reduce waste in their everyday lives, and figures she has a good chance of locating one from among our members. Given that we iTulipers are a pack of non-mainstrean contrarians and skeptics, she's come to the right place.

Families featured on the show receive $20,000 and iTulip.com will be mentioned on the show. Each family should consist of two parents, at least one child between the ages of 5-17, and should reside in the continental U.S.

If you or any families you know are interested in applying and/or speaking with Jodi, you or they are welcome to email swap@itulip.com. Say a bit about the family and a number where you or they can be reached and we'll put you in touch with Jodi. Of course, iTulip.com's privacy policy applies. We will only share the information with Jodi.

    This should be fun.

    Sincerely,

    Eric Janszen

Hmm.... I live in the attic of a triplex I own and rent to students, drive a twelve year-old pickup truck (paid for) but fill up the tank only once every three months, shop at thrift stores, ride my bike or walk to almost everywhere I need to go, and am a gold and silver hoarder. Too bad I'm not married...

If you want to go for an extreme, however, the most non-mainstream, anti-materialist, anti-consumerist man I know keeps a blogger account and has the wife and two kids, though I don't know that he'd be amenable. I would recommend going to his "How Far From Babylon" blog and start reading at the beginning of the archives as I'm sure there are a number around here who would find it to their liking. Any man who takes Chekov out to hoe his beans and enters into a conversation with a passing stranger on the nature of money and inflation throughout the ages is someone I wouldn't mind taking a walk with.

A great show. Don't agree with the NYT reviewer that says "Wife Swap" is fundamentally conservative. It's subversive. These days everyone likes to talk about faaaaaaamily... I draw that out because that's the smarmy PC way it's talked about. The Christian Right waxes particularly unctuous on the topic. A lot of people do better away from their screwed up families. The show debunks the entire idea that "family" is necessarily better for some people than some other close group they're in, like a bunch of co-workers or soldiers or whatever, where a person may get a better deal, support and so on. Or a gang! The show does this in a subtle way. It's not what you think. Hey... isn't that itulip's tag line?

Quick update: Our first iTulip family applied to be on the show earlier this week. We got our fingers crossed that they get accepted. Everybody wish them luck!

The best analogy for an Internet Forum is a local neighborhood bar or pub. The patrons set the tone of the place, but it's up to the barkeep on occasion to make sure all the patrons behave so that the pub remains the kind of place the regulars want to keep coming back to.

Patrons will engage in passionate arguments. As long as the arguments are thoughtful, made without derogatory or disparaging comments, everyone is being respectful of each other, and no one is feeling threatened, then all is well. The iTulip pub has a one strike rule on racist comments and spam. There are plenty of sites out there where raciscts can blab away at their heart's content, but not here.

Patrons are encouraged to criticize the establishment itself, as long as criticism is presented in a respectful way. New members are welcome, and we've seen over 60 new members join this forum in the past two week alone.

Occasionally, someone walks into the iTulip pub not knowing that this is how the partons like things here. He's yelling and cursing, pounding his glass on the table, figuratively speaking, and otherwise behaving obnoxiously. We all know the type. At first the other patrons try to ignore him, but eventually if the barkeep doesn't do something, the patrons will try to shut him up so they can keep on with their enjoyment of the place. This usually makes him even more obnoxious because he is often behaving this way in order to pick a fight. The barkeep is obligated to remind this new visitor how to conduct his or herself or shown the door, because if the barkeep leaves this job to the other partons the atmosphere becomes unpleasant and unenjoyable, and soon the other patrons begin to leave.

Interestingly, the other patrons all seem to just "know" the rules of conduct, and rarely does an iTulip.com pub barkeep have to even spell them out never mind deal with a patron engaging in bad behavior.

In the past six months, only a couple of new members have been bounced out of the iTulip pub. The other patrons haven't noticed, except in the case of one spammer. And that's how it should be.

The result is that the other 100 active patrons know that when they come to the iTulip pub, they don't have to put up with obnoxious people. It's just that kind of place.

One more thing. Not aimed at you in particular, but as a fair amount of anti-Semitic posting on the Daily Reckoning forums have been pointed out to me (although I have not checked recently to see if they've been deleted or not) and some of the new members are from there, a simple reminder: one strike rule on racism here, and anti-Semitism is right up there on the top of the list. Zero tolerance. Thanks.

Speaking just for me, there is and was also anti-Arab and other less than delightful aspects to many of the posts there, as well as the existence of more than a little spam.

I've been quite pleased with this forum and site itself, as well as what seems to be a very fair approach on moderator tasks. The primary emphasis of usefulness of the board itself and the sometimes wild exchange of broad viewpoints is what originally made DR a good forum, but it appears that the lack of almost any moderation has condemned it to the status of a relative backwater board (edit/add - having just re-read this, it seems overly harsh - I sincerely hope that DR heads back towards a less "emotional" board... and my participation has dropped a lot).

On a lighter note, I've found this to be of some help with TUS translation... and its still a challenge... ;)
